Lisa Borders, president of the WNBA and former vice president for global community affairs at Coca-Cola, and Washington Mystics stars Monique Currie and Elena Delle Donne will explore the importance of athletics and team sports for elementary, middle and high school girls and discuss the challenges that girls and women face in the business of sports, as well as life lessons they have learned. Currie is a D.C. native, and a graduate of Bullis, and Duke. Delle Donne is a native of Delaware, and a graduate of the University of Delaware, and Ursuline Academy. </span></p><p><span style="background-color: #ffff00;">The Women’s Sports Foundation has observed that, for boys, sport has long been a vital source of socio-cultural learning experiences that instill confidence, build self-esteem, and teach resilience. Boys have traditionally learned the value of striving for excellence, setting goals, and teamwork by playing sports; and those lessons learned often translate into confidence, and social advantages. To be sure, great progress has been made in encouraging girls’ interest in participating in sports and ensuring that girls’ sports programs are equitably resourced , notably at the collegiate level , where Title IX has had a transformative impact. There’s compelling data that suggests the longer girls play team sports, the higher their rise in the working world. Yet girls still quit playing earlier, and in much higher numbers than boys do. During Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic lunar calendar, Muslim students who are able to do so will refrain from all food and drink from sunrise until sunset, seeking spiritual reflection throughout the month. An important part of Ramadan is the opportunity to break the day's fast together as a community. The event will start in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room with a dialogue on the act of fasting as it is expressed in various faiths, how Ramadan is practiced around the world, and the significance of Ramadan to students at Sidwell Friends. Imam Mohamed Magid, executive director of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, and a prominent national figure in interfaith dialogues, will be the keynote speaker. This will be followed by a Q&A session and a community meal at sunset.
