Make your own paper on Sunday, June 3, 10 am–1 pm with exhibiting artist Anna Riley (https://madmuseum.org/events/studio-sunday-84) ! In this iteration of Studio Sunday, visitors will learn how to make their own custom paper using traditional fibers and non-traditional materials (such as flower petals, leaves, and thread). At 10:30 am, kids and their families are invited to join us for a reading of The Great Paper Caper by Oliver Jeffers as part of MADreads, which combines interactive storytime and visual exploration to bring books to life.

Objects and collections take center stage in these experimental films, which present a parade of motifs ranging from the ornamental to the lexical. This program carries out many of the concerns within the Surface/Depth exhibition, questioning hierarchies of material capital and navigating the personal and political boundaries of the pattern.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of MAD’s Artist Studios Program— which has hosted over 150 artists, designers and craftspeople—we’re welcoming back our first-ever artist-in-residence, Cynthia Alberto (https://madmuseum.org/learn/cynthia-alberto) , to present participatory weaving projects and artist-led demonstrations from June 5–August 5. An artist, designer, and founder of the Brooklyn-based healing arts studio Weaving Hand, Alberto seeks to bridge traditional and contemporary weaving techniques, drawing inspiration from ancient communities of Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa.

Geared towards K-12 educators, the event kicks off with a keynote presentation by MAD’s Windgate Research and Collections Curator, Elissa Auther, who will discuss Schapiro’s “femmages” and contemporary artists’ works in the Surface/Depth exhibition. Participants will also experience educator-led gallery activities that focus on fiber arts and a Zero Waste Weaving workshop facilitated by MAD summer artist-in-residence Cynthia Alberto.

Tanya Aguiñiga: Craft & Care (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/tanya-agui%C3%B1iga-craft-care) highlights the art and activism of Tanya Aguiñiga, founder of AMBOS (Art Made Between Opposite Sides), a long-term initiative that activates sites along the US-Mexico border through collaborative art-making and storytelling projects.The exhibition features photographic documentation, radio broadcasts, ephemera, data, and other materials generated by AMBOS, as well as seven other projects from Aguiñiga’s ongoing design and artistic practice.

Derrick Adams: Sanctuary (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/derrick-adams-sanctuary) presents new work in mixed-media collage, assemblage on wood panels, and sculpture presented in a site-specific installation designed by the artist that reimagine safe destinations for the black American traveler. This exhibition was inspired by The Negro Motorist Green Book, a Jim Crow –era guidebook identifying businesses that were places of refuge and leisure for black American road-trippers during a time of open and legally prescribed discrimination.

Interlace (http://madmuseum.org/exhibition/samantha-bittman-interlace) wraps the entry-level elevator bank in a colorful, oversize weaving draft –the pattern weavers follow to work out their designs in advance, dress their loom, and subsequently weave a piece of cloth. This particular weaving draft represents a “sample blanket,” a textile that uses different warp and weft combinations in small sections in order to experiment with weave structures, yarn and color. Printed at this scale, the pattern is recognizable as a tool specific to textile work, while resembling the pixels associated with the digital.
