** NK Summit Might Not Work Out

President Trump today said a planned June 12 summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un “may not work out,” adding if it doesn’t happen then “maybe it would in the future,” as the
Wall Street Journal’s Michael Bender and Jonathan Cheng report (https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-says-june-summit-with-north-korea-may-not-work-out-1527008088?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=15bdcce40e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_05_22&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-15bdcce40e-145367789) .

And, as Reuters reports (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-usa-southkorea/trump-casts-doubt-on-planned-summit-with-north-korean-leader-idUSKCN1IN1Q1?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=15bdcce40e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_05_22&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-15bdcce40e-145367789) , South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who spent part of the day with President Trump at the White House, was optimistic about the summit in his Oval Office remarks. His national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, had told reporters en route to Washington he believed there was a “99.9 percent chance” the Trump-Kim summit would take place as scheduled.

Meanwhile, as Reuters also reported (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-missiles-milius-japan/u-s-reinforces-east-asia-ballistic-missile-defense-as-trump-kim-summit-nears-idUSKCN1IN0O9?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=15bdcce40e-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_05_22&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-15bdcce40e-145367789) today, the USS Milius, one of the U.S. Navy’s most advanced guided missile destroyers, arrived in Japan on Tuesday to reinforce defenses against any ballistic missile attacks by North Korea, or anyone else in East Asia.
