Dear Upper School Parents,

I expect that you are as excited about Friday’s 2018 Prom as are your children. We are looking forward to it as well. While the Parents Association organizers have kept you informed already, this email is meant as a final set of reminders.

Logistics

For seven years we have successfully held our Prom at the Georgetown Four Seasons and we will continue to follow the procedures that have worked so well. Our prom is a six-hour long community event from beginning to end. The charter buses will begin boarding at our garage at 8:15 pm sharp and they will return to the garage after 2:00 am in the morning. We expect everyone to be satisfied yet tired upon return. Rather than have your teenagers drive themselves or be driven by a peer we strongly recommend that parents pick up their children or arrange for another adult to do so. Please be certain with your child about where they may go following the Prom and with whom.

Attendance

Attendance will be taken upon arrival at the hotel and again prior to departure from the hotel. No student will be allowed to leave early without prior specific permission from the Dean of Students. No student may leave early without their parent’s physical arrival at the Prom. If you would like your child to leave the Prom prior to 2:00 am, please contact the Dean of Students and Crystal Matthews so that an official list may be maintained. Only under rare and specific circumstances do we allow early dismissals from the Prom, as early departures siphon off the spirit from the whole event.

Alcohol and Drug Policy

Please remember that school policy clearly prohibits the use, distribution, or possession of drugs and alcohol on campus and at school-sponsored events. You should familiarize yourself with the relevant passages on pages 18-19 and 57-58 in the Community Handbook. As we do at all dances, the Breathalyzer will be on site to be used when warranted. Student bags may also be checked when warranted. The possible penalties for violating these policies include suspension and expulsion. More broadly, we hope that you are not hosting afterparties as we are all too familiar with news stories of teenagers exercising poor late-night judgment, whether on the road or in someone’s home. Therefore, please remind yourselves of the legal consequences for underage substance use for teenagers and for the hosting families.

We give many thanks to Sherri Cafritz, Karen Tarazi, Allison Tierney, and the student prom committee, who have made this event possible. I am looking forward to Friday. Feel free to contact me and to copy my assistant, Crystal Matthews. Thank you.
