2020 WATCH - "Donald Trump's megadonor road show," by Campaign Pro's Maggie Severns: "[Paul] Singer amicably chatted with the president and a dozen other high-dollar donors during a fundraiser for Trump's reelection campaign, according to a person in the room. And he gave $300,000 - the maximum amount an individual can give - to the Republican Party this spring shortly before the event. It was a sign of success for a months-long charm offensive by the president and his allies toward establishment Republicans who were wary of him during the 2016 campaign.

- "The president - who claimed in 2016 that he was self-funding his campaign so he couldn't be 'controlled' by donors, even though he ultimately raised most of his funds from outsiders - has developed a new ease with the donor class and is spending significant time away from the White House fundraising from them. Trump has attended eight events for the political groups supporting him in 2018, an uptick from the five he attended the previous year, and he has crisscrossed the country to Los Angeles, Dallas and Columbus, Ohio." MESSAGING MANTRA -"The 2 words you can't say in a Democratic ad: 'Single payer,'" by POLITICO's Jennifer Haberkorn: "Democratic voters want single payer health care. But don't expect to hear Democratic candidates talk about it - at least not in those words. To avoid divisive intraparty fights that drive candidates left - only to be attacked by Republicans for favoring socialized medicine - the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee warned aspirants last year about the political liabilities of endorsing 'single payer,' according to sources familiar with the advice. An influential progressive group even urged candidates to discard the often-misunderstood phrase and embrace 'Medicare for
all' to draw strong connections with the popular seniors' health program. A third of the way through the 2018 primaries, Democrats have largely prevented the Bernie Sanders-led groundswell of single payer support from swamping the contests." Full story.

RACE CALLED - CA-49: Democrat Mike Levin advanced to the general election, after The Associated Press called the race Thursday night. Levin will face Republican Diane Harkey in the open race to replace GOP Rep. Darrell Issa in Southern California.

NEW THIS MORNING - ON THE AIRWAVES - CLF releases TV ads in OH-12 special: The Congressional Leadership Fund launched two TV ads in the House special election in Ohio, part of an initial $250,000 buy that will run simultaneously on broadcast and cable. The first ad focuses on Republican Troy Balderson's support for the "middle class tax cuts," and attacks Democrat Danny O'Connor for "standing with" Nancy Pelosi. The second ad centers on the opioid crisis. CLF is also launching a field program to boost Balderson, opening an office in Franklin County and planning to knock on 500,000 doors by August 7. - Tester attacks Rosendale in new TV ad: "Sen. Jon Tester's (D-Mont.) campaign began airing an attack ad against newly minted GOP nominee Matt Rosendale today, according to Advertising Analytics. The service captured the ad running on broadcast TV two days after Rosendale, the state auditor, won the Republican primary to face Tester in the general election. The ad labels the Republican 'Maryland Matt' - picking up on attacks from Rosendale's former Republican primary rivals, who hammered him as a carpetbagger because he moved to Montana from Maryland in 2002." - Republican Braun releases first general election ad in Indiana Senate race: "Republican Mike Braun's campaign released its first general election ad today, a biography spot highlighting his business record and outsider message." You can view it here. Full story.

AWKWARD - "Why hasn't Bernie Sanders endorsed his son's run for Congress?" by The Boston Globe's James Pindell and Matt Viser: "[W]hile he's busy endorsing politicians across the country who share his liberal values, closer to home Sanders is taking a noncommittal stand when it comes to his own flesh and blood. Sanders has refrained from endorsing Levi Sanders in his only son's campaign for the Democratic nomination for a New Hampshire congressional seat. ... It is especially strange because Levi has been a constant presence in his father's political life, from sitting on his lap as a 2-year-old during Sanders' first run for public office, to following him around the country during the

AGREE TO DISAGREE - "Campaign committee chairmen spar over Trump effect, use of hacked materials in midterms," by Campaign Pro's James Arkin: "The four lawmakers running the House and Senate campaign committees took diverging views at an event hosted by NBC and The Wall Street Journal on the effect President Donald Trump would have in their battleground races this November." ICYMI - "Michigan Democrat Bets Governor's Race on Universal Health Care" by Bloomberg's Sahil Kapur: "A Democrat running for governor in Michigan is supporting a tax increase to pay for a statewide government-run health-care system, going further than his party's candidates in other parts of the country who are also calling for expanded coverage. Abdul El-Sayed, a physician and former Detroit health director running in a three-candidate Aug. 7 primary, said he'll unveil a detailed plan Wednesday that seeks to place residents with private health insurance or Medicaid into a single-payer system run by Michigan." POLLING PROBLEMS - "More than 53 percent of adults live in wireless-only households," by POLITICO's Steven Shepard: "A new government report out today shows the share of Americans living in wireless-only households continued to increase in the second half of last year. The share of U.S. adults living in households where the only telephone is wireless rose to 53.3 percent from July to December 2017, according to the report from the National Center for Health Statistics, a branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is up from 52 percent in the first half of 2017, and an increase from 50.5 percent in the second half of 2016." Full story.

GETTING THE NOD - JStreetPAC endorses 6 House candidates: JStreetPAC, a pro-Israel liberal group, announced that it endorsed 6 Democratic challengers, including Ammar Campa-Najjar (CA-50), Gil Cisneros (CA-39), Abby Finkenauer (IA-1), Katie Hill (CA-25), Katie Porter (CA-45) and Susan Wild (PA-7).

CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "[Steve] Bannon has blown up and is no longer a factor, but post facto, Uihlein is the answer." - Dan K. Eberhart, a major Republican donor, told The New York Times about the Uihleins, another conservative mega-giving pair. (Flashback!) Severns profiled them in March for POLITICO.
