Last month, I joined colleagues from the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees for an important hearing on digital privacy and had the opportunity to demand answers from Mark Zuckerberg. I wanted to know how Facebook and its leaders could ignore privacy breach after privacy breach, allowing Russian trolls, hate groups and other bad actors to thrive.

This is serious, R.Hunter. This is a matter of protecting Americans' privacy, the sanctity of our elections and our basic sense of fairness here in the United States.

In 2016, Facebook's tools allowed Russians to target voters based on racist and anti-immigrant views - something that may have played a significant role in the outcome of our elections. The social network's tools have also allowed advertisers to illegally discriminate when looking to rent or sell homes, and wildlife traffickers to target the sale of protected animal parts.

All of this happened while putting your personal information - and that of your family, friends and kids - at risk in ways most of us simply could not imagine.

I am working to hold data companies like Facebook accountable so these massive privacy breaches become things of the past. I need to know where you stand:
