Nine students were honored at the 2018 President’s Engagement Prize and President’s Innovation Prize luncheon for ideas designed to make positive, lasting differences in people’s lives. President Amy Gutmann called the young men and women “the kind of Penn students who can realize an amazing dream of very ambitious projects that will make the world better.”

The FDA has expanded its approval for a personalized cellular therapy developed at the Abramson Cancer Center. The additional approval is for the treatment of adult patients with relapsed or refractory large B-Cell lymphoma. “This is an exciting event seeing this life-saving therapy become available widely to a large patient population with an unmet medical need,” said Stephen Schuster, director of the Lymphoma Program. “Many lives may be saved.”

In a seminar on the sounds of the Middle Ages, freshmen Kristen McLaughlin of Stratum, N.H., Oscar Moguel of Houston, and Su Ly of Philadelphia learned about period music and instruments, including shawms, oboe-like woodwinds. The course, taught by Mary Channen Caldwell (not pictured) of the School of Arts and Sciences, also included a field trip to the carillon bells in a historic Episcopal church on Philly’s Rittenhouse Square.

The women’s lacrosse team defeated Yale 14-11 to earn its 11th Ivy League title in the past 12 years and 13th overall. Penn has won the conference championship for three years in a row, after winning eight straight from 2007 to 14. Since ’07, the Quakers are 77-7 in Ivy League play, equating to a .917 winning percentage.

President Amy Gutmann and Provost Wendell Pritchett announced a series of initiatives expanding programs and support for first-generation students. The new Office of Penn First Plus Students will centralize services in one office to address the needs of Penn’s growing first-generation, low-income student population in alignment with the University’s goals of inclusion and access.

Penn student-athletes, including junior Nicole Macco of Aberdeen, N.J.,were among those who competed in the three-day Penn Relays at Franklin Field. It was the 124th year of the internationally known competition that annually features more than 22,000 entrants—more than the Olympic Games. More than 60 countries were represented in some 33 hours of competition in 400-plus events. For dogs with osteosarcoma, a cancer of the bone, the standard treatment has been amputation combined with chemotherapy, and even that rarely staves off the cancer’s spread. Nicola Mason of the School of Veterinary Medicine is embarking on a new way to treat the disease, using a novel immunotherapy-based vaccine to prevent metastasis to other organs.

Justin Watson, the all-time leading receiver in Penn football history, was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Watson, a senior from Bridgeville, Pa., is the 46th Quaker to be selected in the NFL Draft and the first since Jeff Hatch was chosen by the New York Giants in 2002.

New research from a team at the Annenberg School for Communication, led by Joseph Turow, reveals that political party and orientation matter strongly when it comes to how Americans feel about everyday surveillance. This is especially true of monitoring that disproportionately affects low-income populations in the U.S. Democrats and independents, the work showed, described the scrutiny much more negatively than did Republicans.
