The Boston Globe Commentary November 16, 2016 Fariborz S. Fatemi His supporters chanted, “Drain the swamp! Drain the swamp!Drain the swamp!” Their presidentialcandidate Donald Trump promised them, if elected, “We are fighting for everycitizen that believes that government should serve the people, not the donors, not the special interests.” Guess what? Trump is president-elect and histransition team is loaded with lobbyists and special interests. Why should thatbe a surprise? During the campaign, Trump was rated as lying and creatingnon-existing facts 80 per cent of the time that he spoke. These specialinterests are the same people paid to lobby the Congress to dismantle theAffordable Care Act in favor of insurance companies, sell off our public lands, dismantle the clean air and environmental initiatives, and blow up the deficitagain by huge military expenditures, to name a few. All these things are moneymakers for the special interests. But wait, this is not all of it. By playingmental gymnastics, the same people chanting “Drain the swamp” voted for DonaldTrump and then voted for the same members of Congress that for at least the past10 years, have created the “swamp” and have earned the lowest ratings in thehistory of the Congress. If you reallywant to drain the “swamp,” vote to throw them out, not re-elect. So much for “draining the swamp.” That is whythe “swamp” is now overflowing as never before. `
