Hunter: I know your Dad is a very good note writer and very responsive to the dedication of our military. I want to bring this tragic loss to his attention. The 25 year old grandson of the late US Senator Jack Miller of Iowa and nephew of Washington Government Relations Attorney Jim Miller was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan (see attached). Jim mentioned to me that your dad knew his dad Jack in the old bi-partisan Senate when party self-interests ended at 5:00 PM every day. Scott’s funeral is Thursday, July 10, 2014 @ 8:30 AM in Arlington National Cemetery. The family is under the greatest of pain and if your Dad could have a note delivered to the Studenmunds’ with an expression of emotional support, it would be extremely meaningful coming from him as everyone knows the Biden’s have suffered difficult tragedies as a family as well. Please enjoy the July4th holiday weekend and thank you for your consideration, Jack. From: Barbara [mailto:bstudenmund@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, July 4, 2014 9:37 AM To: Barbara Studenmund Subject: July 10 – Scott’s Arlington Service and Reception Jaynie, Woody and Connell asked me to forward this letter from them about the schedule for Thursday, July 10. Please contact me if you have any questions. Thank you very much for your loving support. Barbara Dear Friends, Thank you for honoring Scott by attending his burial ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery on July 10th. Your presence will be incredibly meaningful for us and the rest of Scott's extended family. This ceremony at Arlington will be the fifth service honoring Scott. The first took place in Kandahar, Afghanistan, followed by ceremonies at Dover, DE (to welcome Scott and his fallen teammate and friend back to US soil), Clarksville, KY (at Scott's base, Fort Campbell), and La Canada, CA (at Flintridge Prep, Scott and Connell's high school). A particularly powerful eulogy was given in Kandahar by one of Scott's Special Forces team members, and we were so touched by his words that we've attached a copy so that everyone can read what he had to say. On the 10th, we've been asked to meet at the Administration Building of the Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) at 8:30 am, but it makes sense to arrive a little early if at all possible. (The address is One Memorial Drive, Arlington, VA.) We'll drive as a group from the administration building to the burial site. For directions to ANC, take a look at their website: http://www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/VisitorInformation/Directions.aspx Once you arrive at ANC, there will be a security guard who will be directing traffic into the Welcome Center parking facility. Stay to the right on Memorial Drive and inform the security guard that you are attending a funeral and tell them Scott's name. Then continue on Memorial Drive to the Administration Building, as instructed by the guard. There will be four other ceremonies being organized at that time, and there could be as many as 175 people in our group, so it'll probably take some time for them to organize us and get us headed in the right direction. Scott's service is scheduled to begin at 9 am with full military honors (which are described in the ANC website). The service should end around 10:00, and after that you're invited to a reception at Jaynie's high school, Georgetown Visitation, which is just a short drive away. The address there is 1524 35th Street, NW, Washington DC (at the corner of 35th and Volta), right near Georgetown University. If you drive onto campus through the gates, an attendant will direct you to the upper parking lot of the campus. The reception itself will be in Founders Hall, which is the main building on your left as you drive onto campus. They'll serve light refreshments (but not lunch) at the reception. This will give all of us a chance to greet each other and remember our cherished Scott. With love, Woody, Jaynie and Connell -- Barbara Studenmund
