Wednesday - May 4, 2011 From the School From the US Principal, Lee Palmer Many thanks to the Parents Association for the scrumptious Faculty/Staff Appreciation breakfast and for all the support we get from parents all year long! The Seniors have finished classes and began their Senior Projects this week. The senior project period runs from May 2 through June 3, 2011. Once seniors complete their projects, they will share their experiences with the community through a “Project Defense” before a faculty panel to be scheduled between May 31 and June 3 and in the form of a presentation to students and faculty on the last day of school, June 9. We thank all the parents who have provided project opportunities for our seniors. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Co-Clerks of the Senior Project Committee, Min Kim (kimm@sidwell.edu) and Joanna Premand (premandj@sidwell.edu). Advanced Placement Exams take place for the next two weeks. On Thursday, May 5, the 9th Grade will spend the day at the National Zoo as part of their Biology classes. The 10th Grade will take the ACT college admissions test in the morning and watch the movie "October Sky" in the afternoon. This movie has strong connections to many disciplines, including SFS community service. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_Sky to learn more about it. Most of the 11th Grade will be taking the English AP Exam, and the 12th Grade will be on Senior Projects. It is time to update household and student information for the 2011-2012 school year. In keeping with Sidwell Friends’ environmental commitment, this information will be collected online. All households, including new and returning families, need to confirm their contact information. Additionally, a custodial parent/guardian must complete a health questionnaire, and provide health insurance and emergency contact information, for each child. Due date: June 1st. Report cards will be held for returning students until the online form is submitted. You should have received an email Monday, May 2nd, with specific instructions for accessing the forms on our website. Please be mindful to update household, health and contact information throughout the school year as changes occur. If you need assistance, contact Jane Lenherr at (202) 537-8169 or registrar@sidwell.edu.Important News from Athletics Sports Awards: please join us for the end-of-year Sports Awards for all Upper School students on Tuesday, May 31st, at 5:30 pm. Scapino! is a wonderful piece of comic madness, inspired by Moliere's Les Fourberies de Scapin. It was a huge hit on Broadway, inspiring critics to write: "An evening of sheer delight." NY Post "One of the most joyous events of the season. Jubilant!" The New Yorker "If you miss it you will be crazy, and if you let your kids miss it, you will be simply inhuman." NY Times Note: a jukebox is needed for the production. If you, or a friend, have a jukebox that we could borrow, please contact: Ed Crow, Director, at 202-537-8146 or crowe@sidwell.edu. Thanks for your help. Hope to see you at the theater May 20th-22nd!Community Service Fair: Monday, May 23, 7-9 pm SFS, Edmund Burke School and GDS are sponsoring a Community Service Fair to be held at the GDS US campus on Monday, May 23rd, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The “Conversations on Diversity” series with Tom Farquhar is helping the Head of School and the Board to shape and articulate goals and objectives as the school prepares for our increasingly global and multicultural community and world.
