Subject: Senior projects information

Dear Seniors,
This email is to follow up on the conversation we had yesterday about senior projects. As you know, senior projects are a graduation requirement. They are also an amazing opportunity to pursue a passion, to go out and form relationships with individuals in our community, to explore something new, or some combination of the above.
For your reference, here is a link<https://prezi.com/view/NkWH3UOHPxfk3imjjeuh> to the Prezi that we reviewed, and attached to this email is an electronic copy of the handout provided to you during the class meeting – “Senior Project 2019: Guidelines, Requirements, and Deadlines.”
While we do not expect you to begin work on this project immediately, the senior projects committee wanted to provide you ample time to consider all of your options.
To reiterate some important parts of this process:
Important dates

* Senior projects will be held from Monday, May 6, 2019 – Friday, May 31, 2019.
* Group project proposals are due Monday, February 11, 2019.
* Individual project proposals are due Monday, March 4, 2019.
* Senior project defenses will take place Thursday, May 30 – Tuesday, June 4.
* Senior project presentation day will be Thursday, June 6.
Faculty advisor

* It is your responsibility to seek out a faculty advisor who will work with you on your proposal and throughout the month of May.
* You should plan on speaking to your potential advisor to ask if they are willing to work with you, and then you can work on talking through the logistics of the project.
* Once you have had conversations about your potential project, you can then begin work on the Class of 2019 Senior Project Proposal Google form.
* If you are pursuing an internship or social justice/community engagement project that has an outside supervisor, you do not need to have a faculty advisor.
* If needed, the Senior Projects Committee is happy to work with any students who are searching for an advisor (though members may not have direct experience with the subject matter).
* Please reach out to me if you need assistance finding an advisor.
Senior project proposal form

* To complete your actual proposal, you will use the following Google form<https://goo.gl/forms/9p8PtMnfemIHxRxF2>.
* You should speak to your advisor well in advance of submitting the proposal, but your advisor will have the right to approve (or decline) your project in advance of the senior project committee’s final review.
* If your proposal is accepted (which you should receive notification of via email), you do not need to take any further action. Congratulations!
* If your proposal is declined (which you should also receive notification of via email), you will have received in an initial email containing your responses a link that allows you to “edit responses,” which you should then use to revisit your proposal.
* Before submitting your proposal again, you need to speak to your advisor about why the proposal was denied to ensure the appropriate changes are made for the next review.
Internship opportunities

* Some Sidwell Friends community members may offer to host seniors at their organizations for internships during the month of May.
* I will email out more information about these opportunities as they become available.
Social justice/community engagement or arts projects

* All students submitting a proposal for social justice/community engagement projects must speak to Ms. Krotky (in addition to a faculty advisor or off-campus supervisor).
* All students submitting an independent study (arts-based) project must speak to Mr. Merlin-Jones (in addition to a faculty advisor or off-campus supervisor).
* Ms. Krotky and Mr. Merlin-Jones will have approval over these specific projects, so it is wise to speak to them in advance of submitting your proposals (or they will automatically get sent back to you).
