Everyone has now gotten the call from Time, including me. I just spoke to Michael. He noted the statement Burisma put on its website advocating US support for Ukrainian energy independence/transparency as well as the recent lobbying filing last week.

His angle is that Burisma, a company that has never done much outside of Ukraine, has now, in the last few months: 1) put two high profile Americans on its board; 2) engaged a well-known and well-connected lobbyist and; 3) put a statement on its website supporting US engagement with Ukraine.

Michael is looking to write a story tonight and file it for the web. Then it could run as a smaller piece in next week’s magazine. I have outline his questions below as well as suggested responses that we will convey. Given the time sensitivity here, let’s try to avoid too much line editing and if you are ok with the spirit of the answers one us from FTI will get back to Michael shortly.


- Who owns Burisma? Mr. Nikolayi Zlochevskyi.


- As part of his role with Burisma, is Hunter Biden engaged with US officials or members of Congress? Mr. Biden has not and will not be engaged with the U.S. government or any government related to Burisma. His role, like all board members, is to provide strategic guidance to Burisma.


- Does Hunter Biden support the Markey bill to increase energy aid to Ukraine? Burisma, and Hunter Biden in his role as a director, is not taking on a stance on any particular piece of legislation. Instead, as a leading independent oil and gas producer in Ukraine, Burisma welcomes the continued engagement of US lawmakers on these important matters.


- What is the company trying to accomplish by engaging with the West/Western governments? As part of its commitment to enhanced transparency and good governance, Burisma created a Board of Directors in 2013 to help expand the company’s international reach, increase investment opportunities and ensure best practices in compliance and good governance. Burisma supports energy independence, economic growth, national sovereignty and regional stability and will engage as needed to encourage efforts to further these goals.

Hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend in the mountains!

David and I wanted to make you aware of this voicemail that David received this morning from Michael Scherer at TIME magazine. Michael had left David a voicemail late on Thursday as well, but at that time did not indicate why he was calling and said it would be okay for David to respond after the holiday weekend. As you know, David has been out of the office in Nantucket.

As it turns out, Michael is writing a story on Burisma, which he said will go to print this evening. Since the start of our engagement, we know that you mentioned that you and the PR team would be handling all press inquiries, so we wanted to get your thoughts on how we should proceed. David has been in back-to-back meetings all of this morning and will continue to be in back-to-back meetings until about 3PM today.

David is aware of this voicemail, and would be happy to step out of a meeting to give you a call today to discuss. Our thought was that we might have David’s assistant, Lindsay, return Michael’s call to let him know that David has been out of the office. We would hope this would result in the article stating that David was unavailable to comment, as opposed to some sort of statement that made it seem like we were unwilling or refusing to engage with the reporter.

Again, we are happy to schedule a quick call on this today. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.
