Greece public sector strike Bodies including the largest public and private sector trade unions, Adedy and GSEE, stage another general strike against austerity measures agreed as part of the multibillion-euro European Union-IMF bail-out. AT&T and T-Mobile merger A US Senate judiciary committee in Washington debates proposed merger of AT&T with T-Mobile. Information gathering The Information Security Expo begins in Tokyo alongside other expos including cloud computing, data storage and smartphones (until Friday 13). Europe’s bankers meet Senior bank executives look at how retail banks can drive revenue through customer solutions, operational efficiency and risk management at the European Banking Forum in Brussels (until May 13). Thursday May 12 EU discusses border issues The Justice and Home Affairs council meets in Brussels to discuss the impact of the migrant crisis in Greece and southern Europe on the EU’s open borders policy. Weiwei sculpture on show Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s outdoor sculpture “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads“ opens in London at Somerset House as part of a world tour. The artist was arrested at Beijing airport on April 3 and has not been seen since. Warhol’s portrait auctioned Andy Warhol’s portrait “Liz #5” of Elizabeth Taylor, the actress who died in March, is auctioned at Contemporary Art Part I in New York for an estimated price of $20-30m. Europe’s space age The EU’s space programme will be discussed at a European Commission conference in Budapest under the FP7 research framework, focusing on exploration, monitoring climate and future research (until May 13). Report on human rights Amnesty International launches its 2011 report on the state of human rights in 157 countries which sets its agenda for tackling human rights abuses in the year ahead. Strike in South Africa Nationwide strike called by the South African Municipal Workers Union ahead of May 18 local elections, protesting against privatisation, limitations on worker rights and the dissolution of provincial governments. Saturday MAY 14 Haiti inaugurates president Michel Martelly takes over Haiti’s presidency from René Préval after winning a March 20 election run-off. FA Cup final kicks off Manchester City face Stoke City at Wembley in London for the 130th final of world football’s oldest domestic cup competition. Barcelona geared up Barcelona International Motor Show begins, with events continuing until May 22, when the Spanish Grand Prix takes place at the city’s Circuit de Catalunya.
