What Facebook's New Privacy Settings Mean For You


Facebook recently announced a host of new privacy settings for users across their site. Here's what you need to know about the new settings and what they mean for you.


About the New Privacy Settings

One of the most exciting updates is a privacy tool known as the Facebook Privacy Dinosaur. This tool will alert you before you post information publicly to see if you actually want to share that information with the general public. This tool is rolling out gradually, so keep an eye out for when it appears on your account. Another new feature that will enhance Facebook privacy comes in the form of new default settings for first-time users. Previously, Facebook would automatically set your account settings to 'Public', allowing anyone to see your information. Now, the default setting for new users will be 'Friends, allowing only people you are friends with to see your private information. In
addition, Facebook has made it easier to see who is able to view your updates made from a mobile device. Visibility settings will now appear at the top of the 'Update Status' box on mobile devices.

What This Means For You

While Facebook has come under fire in the past for making it hard for users to maintain their privacy, these new measures seem to offer more protection for Facebook account holders. These updates will become available in waves, so keep checking your privacy settings and account to see when they become available to you.
