To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) Note: The Evening CSIS will be “gone fishin’” until Monday, July 11. Happy Fourth of July to all and keep smiling! ** Identified ------------------------------------------------------------ Turkey’s Hurriet Daily News reports (http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-police-crack-down-on-isil-as-death-toll-rises.aspx?pageID=238&nid=101087&NewsCatID=509) that a total of 22 people accused of having links to ISIS were detained in Istanbul and the western province of İzmir on June 30, as Turkish police launched a wide-scale crackdown on the group following the Istanbul Atatürk Airport suicide attacks that killed 44 people and wounded 239. The three suicide bombers who brought horror and bloodshed to Istanbul’s main airport were identified today as nationals from Russia, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, adding fresh leads for investigators digging into suspected ISIS networks, as Reuters reports. (http://in.reuters.com/article/turkey-blast-raids-idINKCN0ZG0T5 ) And, a US law enforcement source told CBS News that authorities believe the attackers were trained and fought on the battlefield in Syria and possibly in Iraq because of their tactics, CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton reports (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/istanbul-airport-attack-suicide-bombers-russia-central-asia-turkey/) . ** Intrigue and Betrayal ------------------------------------------------------------ In a day of intrigue and betrayal, predictions about the next prime minister of Britain were overturned today as the presumed favorite, Boris Johnson, said he would not run after his ally in the Brexit campaign, Michael Gove, suddenly announced his candidacy, as the New York Times’ Steven Erlanger and Stephen Castle report (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/01/world/europe/britain-conservative-party.html) . In the US, stocks rallied today, and three days of gains chipped away at the losses that followed the UK vote to exit the European Union, leaving the Dow Jones Industrial Average less than 100 points away from where it was last Thursday, before the referendum results, as the Wall Street Journal’s Riva Gold and Akane Otani report (http://www.wsj.com/articles/europe-stocks-fall-on-bank-stress-test-results-1467273339) . Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Jon Alterman today authored a new commentary for War on the Rocks: “Brexit’s Roots in the Middle East. (http://warontherocks.com/2016/06/brexits-middle-east-roots/) ” ** Beyond Parallel ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS’s Korea Chair today launched “Beyond Parallel (http://beyondparallel.csis.org/ ) ,” a CSIS iDeas Lab micro-website designed to deliver greater clarity and understanding to policymakers, strategists, and opinion leaders about Korean unification. New satellite images released today by Beyond Parallel suggest a decrease in Chinese-North Korean economic interaction since North Korea’s nuclear test on January 6. ** CSIS Survey ------------------------------------------------------------ The Defense-Industrial Initiatives Group at CSIS is conducting a public survey on the Future of Army Modernization. The survey is part of a larger, ongoing study on how the Army can optimize its modernization strategy to maximize the capabilities delivered to the war fighter in an era of constrained budgets. The survey questions focus on the threats, challenges, and opportunities for Army modernization in the near term to far term. The survey is open until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2016. Responses are anonymous.
