Message from Lee

Many thanks for the scrumptious PA Faculty Staff Appreciation Breakfast! Delicious as always and very much appreciated by all.

The 12th Grade Parent Conversation that was scheduled for Thursday, May 3 at 7:30 am in the Dining Room is cancelled. I invite any senior parent to share questions, concerns, or suggestions with me at any time.

Seniors received their packets for Commencement and enjoyed time with their advisors in their final Class Meeting on Monday. They have exams this week, and their final day of classes is this Friday. AP exams and Senior Projects begin on Monday, May 7.

Last Wednesday, Tyler Cowen, 8th Annual Anindya Dehejia '78 Fellows Program Memorial Lecturer, joined students from last semester's senior economics elective over lunch for a lively discussion before speaking at Upper School Collection and a later afternoon lecture for faculty, staff and the public. Dr. Cowen is the Holbert C. Harris Professor of Economics at George Mason University. His new book on the economics of food, An Economist Gets Lunch: New Rules for Everyday Foodies, was published in April 2012. His previous book, The Great Stagnation, was a New York Times bestseller. Bloomberg BusinessWeek recently referred to him as "America's Hottest Economist," and Foreign Policy named him as one of their top 100 global thinkers for 2011. He writes regularly for the New York Times, and he co-writes a blog at www.marginalrevolution.com.

Host Families Needed for International Exchange Students

Sidwell Friends School is very fortunate to have three exchange programs that bring students from our sister schools in Beijing, Shanghai, and Ramallah to live and study with us for the school year. The students stay with host families from the Sidwell Friends community, without whom the exchanges would not be possible.

We need families to host students beginning in September 2012: an 11th grade boy from Beijing, Wuming Zhang (Tom), an 11th grade boy from Shanghai, Laixin Li, and a 10th grade girl from Ramallah Friends, Kristy Shammas.

If you have any interest, we will do our best to accommodate your family's schedule. We hope to find families from the Upper School who could each host for one semester, but we welcome interest from families with students in Middle School, and from families who would prefer to host for shorter periods, whether two-three months or just an occasional weekend, or even for the whole year.

The exchange with the Number 2 High School attached to Beijing Normal University and the high school attached to Fudan University is a longstanding program going back over 25 years, and a key component of Chinese Studies at Sidwell Friends. The program with Ramallah is now in its fifth year of Friends School-to-Friends School exchange. These programs are vital components of Sidwell Friends’ global outreach and they deeply enrich the diversity and educational environment of our community. The relationship with the host family is always the most lasting experience for the international students, and families find the hosting experience to be rewarding. It is important to remember that none of the exchanges would be possible without the generosity of host families in our community. With the increasing pressures placed on family time and the increasingly hectic pace of life, it has become more and more difficult to find families willing and able to host, but the programs will not be able to continue without host families. If you are in a position to host an international student, please consider this opportunity to make an exceptional contribution to our community - we will be very grateful!

101 Umbrellas!

MS and US Dancers Present Work from Spring Term

This Thursday and Friday, May 3 and 4, at both 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm, the MS and US dancers will present work from the Spring term. Inspired by our collaboration with the No. 2 Middle School affiliated with the Beijing Normal University, each piece includes – you guessed it – UMBRELLAS! Come see how simple umbrellas take on an array of images from the beauty of traditional Chinese dance to the zing of Scandinavian folk dance. All are welcome and the event is free. The show starts in the MS wetlands, please wear comfortable shoes and BYOU.
Hoops for the Horn Basketball Tournament and Dance

May 4th, 7:30 pm-10:30 pm

SFS Upper School students are invited to attend Sidwell Friends’ Hoops for the Horn basketball tournament and dance on Friday, May 4th at the Upper School Campus from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. The event is a student-run fundraiser and all proceeds will go to USAID’s Famine, War, Drought campaign created to provide relief in the Horn of Africa. Hoops for the Horn will include a 3-on-3 tournament in the gym (7:30 pm to 9 pm) and a dance in the dining room (9 pm to 10:30 pm). There will be a professional DJ for the dance, MC “Spots” of EventStarDC Entertainment, and lots of pizza and baked goods. Students can form or join a 3-on-3 team, be part of a dance marathon, cheer their friends, dance, or just hang out. Admission is $5 in advance (tickets on sale at lunch) and $8 at the door.

3rd Annual Tour De Friends!

Join us for glorious day of bike riding and friendship in Rock Creek Park to help us raise money for student financial aid on Sunday, May 20th, 9 am. Your participation includes rides of varying distances to be followed by food, drink, music, and plenty of give-a-ways!

US Spring Play Needs 70's Cassette Players

The props department for the Upper School Spring play MUSEUM is in need of a couple of 1970’s (approximately) portable cassette players. They don’t need to work. Please contact Ed Crow.

US Community Service Day (9th - 11th Grades)

Friday May 18th, 8 am - 2:30 pm, Off-campus: Drivers Still Urgently Needed

Thank you to the parents who have volunteered for this event. Adult drivers are needed between 8 am and 1 pm to help with transporting our volunteers to and from the service sites. Drivers are not required to participate in the service projects, but would be welcome to do so. We still need a few more drivers and would appreciate hearing from anyone who can help. If you can provide only pick-up or drop-off, we could still use your help - many drivers are needed to make this day a success! Please contact June Das Gupta with the number of passengers that you can transport, and any timing and/or location restrictions that you may have, and we will try to accommodate all requests as best as possible.
Proposed Change to PA By-laws

The Parents Association (PA) is proposing a change to the PA by-laws. Changing the by-laws requires a written notice to all members of the Parents Association. Following this notification, the change to the by-laws may be enacted by a consensus of the PA All School Committee. The proposed change is to Article X: Nominations, Slate Selection, and Appointments and involves striking the phrase "who are not simultaneously serving in any other capacity on the All-School Committee" from the first sentence in Section 1.

Fourth Grade Car Wash - May 5th

The annual 4th grade car wash is almost here – don’t miss out! The 4th graders will be working hard to clean and shine your car at the Spring Festival on the Lower School campus. It will be held from 3 – 5 pm on Saturday, May 5th. Each car is $10 and the proceeds go towards the 4th grade graduation gift to the school.
