The following is the first segment of Jill's appearance on The View. I will send segment 2 shortly. 11:25AM ET- ABC "The View" Dr. Jill Biden VIDEO: http://mms.tveyes.com/PlaybackPortal.aspx?SavedEditID=1c2c8701-c07d-4719-be8f-b6bdf573a314 WALTERS: our next guest, dr. jill biden wears many hats. a tireless advocate for our troops and the families they leave behind, a full-time college professor of english, and she is a mom who just hosted her daughter's wedding at their home this past weekend. am i forgetting anything? oh, yes, i forgot, her husband just happens to be the vice president of the united states. please welcome back, dr. jill biden! [ cheers and applause ] WALTERS: you picked a very raunchy day to be on with us. i hope we didn't shock you. BIDEN: i know. the audience can now take a breath and talk about children's books. WALTERS: children's books are getting much more high-class. we should point out dr. biden, you're not a medical doctor, but you have a ph.d. in education. BIDEN: yes. WALTERS: and your grandchild is going to be on and your son. you had a very busy weekend. you had a daughter who got married. tell us about it? BIDEN: well, she met howard through our son beau, she's a doctor at jefferson in philadelphia. and we love him -- must be philadelphians. yes. WALTERS: did the vice president cry when he walked her down the aisle? BIDEN: he was emotional. when he gave the speech, the toast, he was emotional. WALTERS: you or just him? BIDEN: it was emotional to be giving your daughter away. even though we love howard, it's a big step. big step. WALTERS: we want to talk about something that really made news and that is when your husband was on a weekend sunday program and said publicly that he supported gay marriage and leaving the president a few days later to say he did, too. some people said this was calculated. that the president knew he was going to say it. did he say anything to you? were you surprised at all? BIDEN: i wasn't surprised at all. joe speaks from the heart. you know that, barbara. and he and the president are on the same page on this. it's just that simple, really. WALTERS: but it wasn't planned? BIDEN: it wasn't planned. BEHAR: Was the president ready to say that, because here's the danger, that he could lose some votes because of it? was he ready to put that out there? BIDEN: i just think they were both in sync on it. BEHAR: good for him. JONES: we know this election, as every election gets really dirty. are you guys geared up for it? you ready? BIDEN: we're ready. and michelle and barack are ready. the team will be out there. JONES: is there something that you go through, the process that you go through at the time get ready for the dirtiness of the election? BEHAR: it gets ugly, is what it does. BIDEN: it does get ugly and that's unfortunate, we'll see. HASSELBECK: do you ever think beyond the election in 2016. there are rumblings that he would be a great president for 2016. or is that something you want? BIDEN: well, i think he would be a wonderful president. [ applause ] BIDEN: thank you, thank you. but we're taking -- you know, we're focused on this election and winning this election. so we're all out there working hard. hopefully, we have four more months to go. BEHAR: i was wondering, you teach students in virginia. virginia college. i was wondering, do they treat you any differently because you are the vice president's wife? BIDEN: no, as a matter of fact, a lot of times, the students really don't know i'm the vice president's wife. JONES: what! you've got to be kidding me. BIDEN: no. JONES: what do they learn in school? [ laughter ] BEHAR: what does the name biden mean? BIDEN: well, you know, they're community college students. they're working. they have children. they're going to school. they don't have a lot of time for tv. JONES: but how does that escape them that the wife of the vice president is you? i mean, what kind of stroganoff are they cooking in the home? BIDEN: i had a student said dr. b., i saw you with michelle obama. and i yelled, hey, mom, that's my english teacher. and my mom said, that's not your english teacher. GOLDBERG: Who would think? it wouldn't occur to people that the vice president's wife would be teaching a class. it's not the same. i just wanted to bring up something because i thought it was a beautiful moment. joe was talking to soldiers who had returned. and he made the most beautiful statement, because he was trying to get them to understand that life can go on after deep trauma. and i wonder, did he shock himself by talking about his previous life and the death of his family? BIDEN: you know, that was at the task conference. i was there. and, you know, joe knows -- has suffered loss of a wife and a daughter. and so when he went out into that audience, he really did connect because he knows what that feels like. he knows the grief. WALTERS: it was very brave. a lot of people forgot that he found you in his life. and he's lucky. and you're lucky. BIDEN: you know, there wasn't -- everybody was crying. i mean, men, women. he so connected. and that's one of the things i love about joe, not as a politician, but as a man. as a person. WALTERS: that's right. BIDEN: that he's real and he connects with people. i think that's -- BEHAR: people love joe. WALTERS: he is real and sometimes it drives the president or somebody crazy. but very quickly, there are people who say he's going to be replaced by hillary clinton. that they're going to swap. it's been denied and denied. he will be the vice presidential candidate running on the ticket with barack obama? BIDEN: right. WALTERS: that's undisputed? BIDEN: absolutely. absolutely. WALTERS: okay. that's good. [ applause ] WALTERS: so dr. jill biden is staying with us. we're going to be right back with her son and adorable granddaughter to talk about her new book, a children's book. stay with us.
