The Roadmap
Please find attached, the Roadmap for Continued US Leadership to End Global
Hunger. This document builds upon the initial Roadmap to End Global Hunger
that was released approximately 3 years ago with the endorsement of more
than 40 NGOs, Members of Congress and the business community. It set forth
a comprehensive approach to address global hunger and offered a series of
guiding principles and recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of US
global hunger programs.

The Roadmap for Continued US Leadership assesses progress achieved since the
initial document was released and offers new recommendations to enhance US
global hunger programs. WFP USA led the process to develop this document
over the last six months in collaboration with the Alliance to End Hunger,
Bread for the World, CARE, Catholic Relief Services, Congressional Hunger
Center, Mercy Corps, Oxfam, Save the Children and Women Thrive Worldwide.
All of these organizations have endorsed the new Roadmap and are actively
working to secure other organization's endorsement. In addition to input
from these organizations, we received input from USG officials (including
unofficial comments from State Department, USAID, USDA and GAO officials),
WFP and other experts.

We are also developing legislation to achieve some of the goals underlying
the Roadmap. We plan to release the Roadmap and launch the campaign to
build support for the legislation in July with the goal of passing the bill
in the next congress. The campaign provides an invaluable tool to engage
more people throughout the country and expand our base of support in
Congress.

The Annual Award Ceremony
I am very pleased to inform you that we have secured the date for our annual
award ceremony: October 3rd. As you know, we have the great pleasure of
honoring David Novak and Christina Aguilera at the ceremony. The event will
be convened at the State Department with the participation of Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton. It will also provide an opportunity to pay tribute
to Secretary Clinton for her extraordinary commitment to addressing hunger
throughout her tenure at the State Department.

Supporting Innovations in Ecuador
WFP USA, in partnership with WFP-Ecuador, is supporting an integrated
program that will provide food to malnourished children in schools that is
purchased from local small scale farmers (who suffer from chronic
malnutrition). The program will provide a market for these farmers -thereby
helping to lift them out of extreme poverty and hunger - and expand school
feeding operations in the most impoverished areas of the country. The
Ecuadorean government has agreed to participate in the project as an
important step towards establishing a national school feeding program. In
addition, an impact evaluation will measure, for the first time, the
combined impact of all of the components of the project. This data will
play an important role in building broader international support for this
type of integrated programming. WFP USA is covering the cost of the food
and the World Bank will fund the evaluation. An overview of the project is
attached.
