BETSEY STEVENSON and JUSTIN WOLFERS: John Boehner’s familiar threat of
a fight with the White House over the debt ceiling could have
different repercussions this time around. “Our analysis of [last
year’s] episode leads to a troubling conclusion: It almost derailed the
recovery, and this time could be a lot worse.” [Link]

normal. Obama has disappointed civil libertarians who think U.S.
policies are neither constitutional nor wise. The "presumptive

criticize; he has suggested that as president he would reinstate the

and less to reality” and there is less political support for free

have a “pernicious effect” on markets. “Just as football players armed

CHIP JACOBS: For all of California Governor Jerry Brown’s “gallant
intentions,” he has “yet to inspire Californians by connecting
environmental problems with what could be a rejuvenating,
self-sustaining economy that electrifies California cleanly while

THE EDITORS: Corporate execs are on shaky ground when blaming
"uncertainty” for their resistance to investment and hiring. “Business
thrives on certainty, to be sure. And Obama's rhetorical broadsides
against business leaders aren't helpful. Nor are declarations like the
one by House Speaker John Boehner on May 15, in which he promised
another bare-knuckle fight over lifting the debt ceiling. Yet of this
one can be certain: You can blame Obama for many things, but
