News You Need: Your monthly rundown from Delaware Senator Chris Coons =============================== Fighting for Gun Safety Reform --------------------------------------------- + The Orlando shooting was an atrocious act of terrorism and hate, and my heart breaks for the grieving families. I am committed to fighting for commonsense legislation to stop the senseless gun violence plaguing our country. That is why I voted for legislation that would close gun law loopholes and why I joined in solidarity with Rep. John Lewis and other House colleagues in a sit-in last week as they demanded a vote on gun safety measures. Robert F. Kennedy's historic "Ripples of Hope" speech. During the worst years of apartheid, Sen. Kennedy's message of hope in the face of injustice rang true. I recently wrote an article about my takeaways from this momentous trip. Read it here: http://articles.philly.com/2016-06-08/news/73625267_1_kerry-kennedy-south-africa-civil-rights-movement + As temperatures rise and the threat of the Zika virus reaching our shores increases, my Democratic colleagues and I have pushed for swift bipartisan action and funding. Time and again, however, we are met with Republican obstruction. I will continue fighting for a rapid response to this crisis, and I hope my colleagues blocking this process will put politics aside for public health. This bill, which I led with a bipartisan group of colleagues, would designate "manufacturing universities" as eligible for competitive grants to modernize their training programs. Soon these programs will more closely align with the needs of modern manufacturing and better prepare students to learn cutting-edge manufacturing. Happening in Delaware ----------------------------- + Rhode Island Sen. Whitehouse and I recently visited coastal Delaware communities affected by rising sea levels. A highlight of the trip was a stop in the long-blighted and often-underwater Southbridge neighborhood. Today the area has hope for a better future thanks to a community-organized cleanup that created new ecosystems and spaces for recreation. I look forward to Delaware continuing to innovate and adapt despite the dangers of climate change. Chuck Schumer is encouraging the Federal Communications Commission to modernize emergency response systems by allowing users to text 911 in an emergency. This kind of instant communication is part of our everyday lives but is missing in life-or-death situations due to reliance on outdated call centers. I am grateful to Sen. Schumer's leadership that will help protect those in emergencies and improve communication with law enforcement.
