In the long list of outdoor games, we may have just found our new favorite: croquet golf. What is it? Think the rules of golf combined with the flexibility of croquet. Players set up their own nine-hole course just about anywhere—the yard, the beach, a park—and instead of using clubs and golf balls, the game is played with specialized mallets and croquet balls. The player who completes the round in the least amount of strokes wins. Easy to learn. Harder to master.

Though a fairly new concept in the South, the game actually goes back to 1969. It was first created in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, when two friends, Geordie Laird and Glen Dugdale, hit upon the idea to swap a croquet mallet for a golf club, eventually designing a heavy-duty mallet that could stand up to a 75-yard drive ( click here to see one in action). After growing up playing it, Glen’s son, Bill, began making custom sets for his friends. Now, he’s taking it to the masses, offering handmade sets online, and it’s beginning to catch on below the Mason-Dixon.

And while croquet golf certainly retains some of its genteel roots, you can leave the fancy whites in the drawer. Check out the built-in bottle openers on the flag pins, too. Yep, this game ought to be right at home in the South.
