Good Friday morning from Aspen. Welcome to July! Happy getaway day, and happy Canada Day. It's 17 days to Cleveland, 24 days to Philly, 131 days to Election Day - and 59 days since Donald Trump became the presumptive nominee with his Indiana victory.

TOP TALKER - Tampa Bay Times p. 1A, "PolitiFact: The truth (so far) in the campaign," by Aaron Sharockman: Out of 650 Truth-O-Meter fact checks over 466 days, "Trump has more statements rated Pants on Fire, 30, than the 21 other candidates for president we've fact-checked this cycle combined. Second on the list? ... Ben Carson, with four Pants on Fire claims. Bernie Sanders has yet to receive a Pants on Fire." Hillary had 1. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc723efebb332aec285f50f9eb4340a315f2a63846b14cc58816e

SO YOU'RE SAYING THERE'S A CHANCE? "Never Trump is never happening at the RNC: The delegates looking to dump Trump are badly outnumbered on a key rules committee," by Kyle Cheney: "Just six [of the 112] members say they'll work against Trump." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc7238f09f10ba3e87f8266ecaa0242319031e0a5b9c178de959a

COMING ATTRACTIONS - "Sanders is itching for a convention fight: If platform flashpoints aren't resolved, the Vermont senator says he'll take his battle to the floor of the Democratic convention," by Daniel Strauss: "Sanders and his team have locked up draft policy wins on language for abolishing the death penalty, expanding Social Security through raising the cap on how much Americans earning $250,000 or more pay to expand benefits, and breaking up the country's largest banks. But that's not everything on Sanders' lengthy priority list, so the senator and his allies are vowing to keep pushing." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc723e254d5a03f9fb1349b9d27536b6aa2ce42574060a542afd9

SENTENCE OF THE DAY - NYT's Jeremy Peters and Ashley Parker: "At one point, two aides confirmed, Mr. Trump was not even aware that the event had to be held in Cleveland, a decision made almost two years ago." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc7235ba0eea6b9d8cc8affa481adbdb399373ef00a17a227a904

POSTCARD FROM CLEVELAND -- Jake Sherman: "Trump and his team in New York are in the middle of putting together the convention lineup and schedule, and it's expected to be released by the middle of next week. ... The convention program is being closely held -- Speaker Paul Ryan doesn't even know if he has a speaking role yet. We were fortunate to get a behind-the-scenes tour of Quicken Loans Arena ahead of the convention. ...

"The convention staff here -- which now numbers more than 100, split between a downtown building and the arena -- say construction is ahead of schedule. The Q -- the nickname for the home of the NBA champion Cavaliers -- is undergoing a complete transformation. A whirlpool used by the Cavs has been covered to make room for workspace." DATA DU JOUR - "Trump has only 1% of black voter support in latest Quinnipiac poll," by N.Y. Daily News' Jason Silverstein: "Clinton ... has 91%." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc723d5f328658c869ba75a3fc66ab83404a58ea8e8367478608b

BREAKING: Posted at 5 a.m. ... "Lynch to Accept F.B.I. Recommendations in Clinton Email Inquiry," by NYT's Matt Apuzzo, with Mark Landler: "Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch plans to announce [at the Aspen Ideas Festival today] that she will accept whatever recommendation career prosecutors and the F.B.I. director make about whether to bring charges related to Hillary Clinton's personal email server ... Her decision removes the possibility that a political appointee will overrule investigators in the case." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc723b42f24aaee64189322b3c12634256ccebfcb063b38d855f0

THE CONVERSATION -- "Limbaugh: Left will provoke 'levels of violence that we have not seen' if Trump wins," by Louis Nelson: "Pointing to violent protests in Baltimore and Ferguson ... [h]e predicted a wave of recount demands ... as well as lawsuits from Democrats attempting to upend a Trump presidency. ... 'What's going to happen the day Trump gets inaugurated? What is the left going to do? They're not going to just sit idly by and accept this ... I think we're going to see levels of violence that we have not seen." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc723e4d40fa5b3e953fa5c456d6e50db5f5b1ecb9f0e78788734

UNDERSTANDING TRUMP ... DAVID BROOKS, "The Coming Political Realignment: How Trump is smashing everything": "By putting trade at the top of the conversation he elevates the issue on which Hillary Clinton is the most squirrelly, where her position reinforces the message that she will say anything to get power. ... Trump's only shot of winning ... is to smash and replace the entire structure of the American political debate. For the past 80 years that debate has been about the size of government ... If that debate structures this election, Trump will get somewhere between 38 and 44 percent of the votes ...

"Trump's only hope is to change the debate from size of government to open/closed. His only hope is to cast his opponents as the right-left establishment that supports open borders, free trade, cosmopolitan culture and global intervention. He would stand as a right-left populist who supports closed borders, trade barriers, local and nationalistic culture and an America First foreign policy. In an age of anxiety, that closed posture might have a shot at winning. ...

"I personally doubt that Trump will be able to pull off a right-left populist coalition. ... But where Trump fails, somebody else will succeed. And that's where he's substantively revolutionary. The old size-of-government question was growing increasingly archaic and obsolete. In country after country the main battle lines of debate are evolving toward the open/closed framework." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc723f828a0e8fe6ba15e084011b8d9bf09ce9cd2025635da015f

--WashPost A1, top of col. 1, "Trump ramps up rhetoric on trade," by Sean Sullivan and Jenna Johnson (online: "Trump starts a trade war - with the Republican Party"): "The rift deepened on Thursday when Trump called out the U.S. Chamber of Commerce by name for the second straight day ... [F]euding with powerful business interests makes him an attractive candidate for many disaffected working-class voters, including some who have supported Democrats in the past." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc723e5f5b271e5096dcefe1d23958ac1d883552659bcd8ea90a6

R.I.P. CRACKBERRY -- "Senate says goodbye to the BlackBerry, at last," by Heather Caygle: "The prehistoric smartphone ... will no longer be handed out to Senate staffers after the current supply runs out ... Staffers were put on alert that since BlackBerry has decided to discontinue the device and there is a limited stock on the Hill, the chamber has no way to replenish the phones once they're gone. ... Currently, the Senate has a little more than 600 various BlackBerry models stockpiled, according to the Sergeant at Arms, and device support for current phones is expected to continue for the 'foreseeable future.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=c07acd8893dfc72396357b1864c1c75fe5d7b24b573382f56681f07d30cf38c0

ZEITGEIST - "Tesla crash could hurt sentiment on driverless cars," by AP Auto Writer Dee-Ann Durbin in Detroit: "It was the crash the auto industry knew was coming but still feared. POSTCARD FROM ASPEN - Daniel's notes from the Ideas Festival - Jason Rezaian, the Post reporter who was held in Iran for more than 18 months, spoke on "Inside an Evolving Iran" -- About Iranian women: "You have a population there that is very educated, more so than the men, more hirable and desirable in terms of employers. ... I've seen in the 15 years that I first started going to Iran, a progression towards a more open society even with the backlash against civil society ... There are certain things that you can't dial back and as long as there is mobile communication and telephone lines and electricity, you can't stop people from doing these sorts of things. It's only a matter of time
before Iran becomes a very open country ... I'm rather optimistic. ... Q: "Is Iran still a revolutionary society?" Jason: "I don't think so. I think they've moved on from that and I think that's one of the great fears of the [political] establishment."

--PARAG KHANNA, "Geo-strategist, best-selling author, world traveler, TED Speaker," per his Twitter: "Cities, whether it's London or Paris or Istanbul or Cairo, have seen empires rise and fall, nations come and go ... but the cities are always there. That reflects our human impulse. We as individuals are seeking security and community and connectedness. ... It is more accurate to say we are a global urban networked civilization than it is to say we are a world organized into culturally homogenous units of 200 territories."

--JEFFREY GOLDBERG of The Atlantic was the MC of Aspen Comedy Night at Belly Up Aspen, where he performed first and introduced the stand-up comics, which included David Litt, Scott Stossel, Emily Yoffe, Nina Totenberg, Alex Wagner, Gov. John Hickenlooper - Goldberg: "I know that you all think this is Aspen Ideas Festival comedy night. That was a lie. This will actually be a 5-hour panel discussion on Brexit's influence on climate change. We have a great panel; I put together 7 of the most self-important people in Aspen. ...

"I ran into [Jason Rezaian] and told him you should come to comedy night and he said 'is it good?' And I said, 'compared to what?' And he said, 'solitary confinement in an Iranian prison.' ... If you look into your own souls ... the reason you're here is you're hoping to see semi-famous drunk people make asses of themselves on this stage. ... I don't want to disappoint anyone but I've checked with all of our performers and none of them is drunk. David Brooks, however, is high as a f***ing kite. I've been feeding him edibles all day. ... What's going to happen here tonight is that an extremely baked David Brooks is going to endorse Donald Trump for president and it's going to be hilarious.
...

"This has become a very popular ticket in Aspen as you know. You've been here awhile. You don't even know who's outside: Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, we couldn't get them in. Yousafzai -- didn't give her a ticket. ... The Dalai Lama. I gotta tell you about that guy. The Dalai Lama, what a f***ing pain in the ass. He's been calling me all week trying to get into the lineup on comedy night. And what I said to him was ... Dalai Lama, that's what I call him, every time you come, all you do is d*** jokes. And we don't need your d*** jokes because Joe Biden is coming later in the week and that's what he's doing at the Aspen Ideas Festival."

MEDIAWATCH - WashPost A1, below fold, "Author Gay Talese disavows his latest book amid credibility questions," by Paul Farhi: "In his forthcoming book, 'The Voyeur's Motel' ... Gay Talese chronicles the bizarre story of Gerald Foos, who allegedly spied on guests at his Colorado motel from the late 1960s to the mid-1990s. But ... Foos sold the motel, located in Aurora, Colo., in 1980 ... 'I should not have believed a word he said,' the 84-year-old author said after The Washington Post informed him of property records that showed Foos did not own the motel from 1980 to 1988. 'I'm not going to promote this book ... How dare I promote it when its credibility is down the toilet?'"
