A Second Chance in Prince George's County

Everyone deserves a second chance. That’s why we’ve partnered with Prince George’s County District Attorney's Office and Prince George’s Community College to launch the Back on Track program. Modeled after a successful program in San Francisco, the new program offers first-time offenders between the ages of 18 and 24 a different option than incarceration -- a second chance to get their lives back on track. The program uses mentors from our Welcome Home Re-Entry program to guide participants as they complete community service, take classes at Prince George’s Community College and re-establish a path to success. WTOP was on the scene to cover the groundbreaking new program <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwtop.com%2f%3fp%3d8775416&srcid=30979&srctid=1&erid=1609457&trid=c20a40b3-d50d-4bb8-9cf0-95a2a09c099c>.

Celebrating World Refugee Day

At a time when refugee numbers are spiking to historic levels across the globe, our own Refugee Center took time to celebrate World Refugee Day with a special luncheon. Every minute that goes by, 24 people leave everything behind they know in their home country to escape war, persecution or terror. For many of the refugees and asylum seekers that are relocated to Washington, D.C., our Refugee Center helps them find employment, apply for housing, and learn the skills they will need to support themselves and their families in a new country. In honor of World Refugee Day, we celebrated refugees and the organizations that help them with an authentic Ethiopian and Cuban luncheon. Father John welcomed community partners, volunteers, staff and refugees and shared the importance of compassion and community in welcoming displaced persons to our country and spoke about the incredible courage it takes to start over in a foreign home.
