Good Monday morning. Huge thanks to Ryan Heath, Daniel Lippman and Blake Hounshell for carrying the torch while I was hiking the aptly named Knife Edge trail to Baxter Peak (5,267 feet) on Mount Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine, and northern end of the Appalachian Trail. TOP TALKER - "Hardly anybody wants to speak at Trump's convention," by Alex Isenstadt: "A slot at the GOP convention used to be a career-maker ... POLITICO contacted more than 50 prominent governors, senators, and House members to gauge their interest in speaking. Only a few said they were open to it ... The widespread lack of interest, Republicans say, boils down to ... the growing consensus that it's best to steer clear of Trump. ...

"New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte 'is not attending the convention' ... Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner 'is not attending the convention' ... Sen. Lindsey Graham ... 'not attending.' ... New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, a rising star who helped to write the GOP platform at the 2012 convention, 'will be in her district working for her constituents ...

"Ohio Sen. Rob Portman will be attending the convention and will be hosting several events in Cleveland over the course of the week. ... ... [In 2012, w]hoever Romney wanted to speak, one ex-adviser to the former GOP nominee recalled, he got." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=446b225ac0db956458c268da82dd18e7ab29cc12c28183288f527c738e79d8cc

--"Trump fuels Democrats' slim House hopes," by Theo Meyer: "Democrats are diving into the forbidding district-by-district math, scrutinizing under-the-radar and cash-starved House candidates who haven't gotten attention, ... to try and get their campaigns in good enough fighting shape to take advantage of a potential Trump backlash ...

"[But] Democratic House candidates are far behind where Republicans were before they regained House control in 2010." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=446b225ac0db95647dc7ba0832e513cc4ceea52d30598a5f98c66acd0a11419a

2016 PLAYERS - "The Believer: How Stephen Miller went from obscure Capitol Hill staffer to Donald Trump's warm-up act-and resident ideologue," by Julia Ioffe: "Miller is 30 years old, and in some ways a quintessential member of the Trump 2016 menagerie: an obscure character suddenly elevated to a national role by dint of hard work, loyalty, and the boss's favor. ... He's deeply connected to some of the most powerful insurgent threads in the Washington GOP, most notably Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions and the Breitbart media machine. As an aide on Capitol Hill, he was a behind-the-scenes architect of the successful effort to kill comprehensive immigration reform in 2014."

MOOK & WEAVER -- "Primary odd couple pushes to unite Democratic party," by AP's Lisa Lerer and Ken Thomas: "There was Robby Mook, Hillary Clinton's [campaign manager], known for his calm temperament, ... and Jeff Weaver, a combative political fighter, ... sharing a Friday night dinner at The Farmhouse Tap & Grill in Burlington, Vermont. ... [O]ver the long months of a frequently contentious primary, the two rival Democratic campaign managers struck up an unusually friendly relationship, founded on exhaustion, goofy jokes and a shared affection for their home state of Vermont. They talk almost daily, text frequently ...

"Now, ... the competing campaign managers have become ... responsible for engineering a graceful conclusion to a hard-fought Democratic contest. ... The two camps are increasingly comparing notes on how best to attack ... Trump. ... Mook, 35, regales his fiercely loyal band of young operatives, known as the Mook Mafia, with impressions, including spot-on impersonations of Bill Clinton and Sanders. Weaver, 50, ... owns and operated a Falls Church, Virginia, comic book and gaming store ...

"[T]he first time they met in person was in October, at the Iowa Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner ... Wearing matching outfits of khakis, blue blazers and Johnston & Murphy brown shoes, they posed for photos with their legs propped up on a security barrier. 'His shoes were in better condition' joked Mook." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=446b225ac0db95641fe9578a6cb6c400c69367cc4b5049ee02869f25c7b905e2

SCOOP - "RNC Plans To Turn Bernie Backers Against Hillary Clinton's VP Pick," by HuffPost's Sam Stein: "In a detailed memo outlining its strategy to combat Clinton's VP choice, the committee says it will frame the selection as both a cynical play to certain constituencies and as an emotional letdown for voters who backed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the Democratic primary. The goals, the memo says, are to 'drive wedges between these top contenders and either Clinton and/or traditional Democrat constituencies, such as labor, environmentalists, and gun control advocates, and other traditional left-wing constituencies.'" http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=446b225ac0db956427e7ce40436c8508be33f17c746e0fed9f9c99b9300c72fc ...
