_WILLIAM PESEK_: From every angle that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton regards the China-U.S. relationship, "tensions that could unnerve
markets or complicate strategic relationships stare back at her.” The blind
activist sheltering in the U.S. embassy in Beijing after escaping from house
arrest; the Bo Xilai scandal; China’s support for the Assad regime in Syria;
and continuing disputes over Iran are among the issues making relations
increasingly tricky. [Link]

_PETER ORSZAG_: The Fed made the mistake of treating the housing collapse as
if it were merely "dot-com bust 2.0." The losses were about the same size,
but unlike the broad dispersal of fallout from the dot-com bubble, the
housing meltdown's losses were concentrated in the financial industry. “The
problem is that the macroeconometric models used by the Fed -- like those
used by the Congressional Budget Office, the White House and others -- had
at best a very rudimentary financial sector built into them.” [Link]

_CLIVE CROOK_: With a new economy on its way, liberals have the right themes
-- risk and inequality -- but the wrong prescriptions. “Instead of resisting
and demonizing the forces that are reshaping economies -- a futile posture
favored by the old left and its friends -- liberals should think harder

_STEPHEN GREENHUT_: In California, police power has gone too far. A peace
officer’s bill of rights makes it virtually impossible to fire an officer
accused of wrongdoing. “Accounts of costly perks and abuses have led voters
-- even in conservative bastions such as Orange County -- to sometimes think
of public-safety officials as scammers rather than heroes.” [Link]

_THE EDITORS_: How is Europe’s effort to rescue Greece like an episode of
the TV show “House?” For starters, “an unreliable patient with alarming
symptoms (Greece) is being treated by a chief doctor who has the bedside
manner of a sociopath (the troika of the European Commission, the European
Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund).” Sunday’s parliamentary
elections could offer a cure. [Link] And _THE EDITORS_ give the Senate
credit for efforts to reform the U.S. Postal Service last week, but write:
“It's going to take tougher measures in the House to get the USPS on the
route to long-term solvency.”[Link]
