<br>
The first is my mother, Helena. When I was born, she and my father had just recently immigrated to America. She didn’t speak much English. She was still not yet a citizen. But watching her work so hard, raise her children, and go back to school to get a new education all at the same time taught me what our country is all about.<br>
<br>
The second is my wife, Stephanie. She inspires me every day with her fierce devotion to her family and to her community. Like so many others with young children, we juggle our commitments to work and family every day, but she makes it all look easy.<br>
<br>
My mom and Stephanie are two of the people I love most in the world. The third mother I’m thinking of today is someone I barely know. About a week ago, I was buying some late night groceries on my way home. It was after 9 p.m. As I was walking into the supermarket, a woman with her two-year-old son in a stroller approached me and told me they had no money for diapers or food. S<img style="float: right; border-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" src="http://myngp.com/BCEImages//UploadImages/2858/6b54ea94-521b-47df-9e40-862451c20bc3.jpg" title="Stephanie" alt="Stephanie" align="right" border="1" height="172" hspace="4" vspace="4" width="257">he asked me to help. As we walked through the aisles, she told me about her struggles to find work and her wishes for her son. <br>
<br>
What she wants for her son is no different than what my mother wanted for me or what Stephanie and I want for our children. It is no different than what any mother or father wants for their kids. A country where there is a ladder of opportunity for everyone willing to work hard. A country with good schools and good jobs and basic fairness.<br>
<br>
Today, nearly a quarter of young families in America live in poverty. A working mother makes 73 cents on the dollar to a man in the same job. And while women now make up a majority of the workforce, it has been 20 years since we last took national action to help parents balance work and family.<br>
<br>
On this Mother’s Day, let's do right by my mom, Stephanie, and all the moms out there who deserve nothing less. </p>
