For the 2014 holiday season: the Middle School Community Service Committee will be supporting A Wider Circle's gift giving program. This allows our families to adopt a family that is unable to purchase gifts for the holidays. Read on for details of how this experience impacted one Sidwell Friends family: This was one of the highlights of our family's holiday season last year! After receiving a detailed wish list, the four of us had so much fun putting gifts together for each member of our Wider Circle family. Our experience was made even richer by getting to know the parent, a single mother in this case, and delivering the gifts to her apartment when her kids were away. It was a powerful opportunity to put ourselves in the places of those less fortunate and help make their holiday wishes come true. Please consider signing up or, if it feels like too big of a commitment, you may wish to partner with another Sidwell Friends family! If you're interested or have any questions, please contact Marjan via email or at 202-664-4706. QUAKER QUOTE William Penn brought his innovative thinking to the founding of governmental institutions in Pennsylvania. He was instrumental in creating the West Jersey Concessions and Agreement of 1677 which were a set of governing principles that created a legislative assembly selected by the 'inhabitants, freeholders and proprietors' of the colony. Native people were represented in these early assemblies - demonstrating Penn's commitment to inclusion and fairness. The Frame of Government that followed in 1682, "constituted a parliament consisting of two houses. The upper house, or the council, consisted of 72 members who were the first fifty purchasers of 5,000 acres or more in the colony and had the exclusive power to propose legislation. They were also authorized to nominate all officers in church and state and supervise financial and military affairs through committees. The lower house, or the assembly, consisted of smaller landowners. It had no power to initiate legislation, but could accept or reject the council’s legislative proposal only." from Frame of Government of Pennsylvania, Wikipedia William Penn's vision of democracy is credited with providing a basis for the US Constitution.
