By Kyle Cheney With Kevin Robillard The following newsletter is an abridged version of Campaign Pro's Morning Score. For an earlier morning read on exponentially more races - and for a more comprehensive aggregation of the day's most important campaign news - sign up for Campaign Pro today. ( http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc6bf64001302152d2438b63e3ac9d80ce2ddd9af3240ac566 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dcf611eff859a843f6e90798e081f5a5e9fa9ace0d53966275 ) LATE-BREAKING - AP projects Delaney winner in MD-06: Democratic Rep. John Delaney has won Maryland's 6th congressional district, the AP projected late Thursday night. Delaney had a 2,269-vote lead over Republican Dan Bongino, capturing 50 percent of the vote to Bongino's 48 percent. Libertarian George Gluck had two percent. Delaney, a freshman who defeated GOP Rep. Roscoe Bartlett for the seat covering Western Maryland and part of Montgomery County, poured $800,000 into his campaign in the race's final days. Updates from the other too-close-to-call races: AZ-2: Democratic Rep. Ron Barber surged in Pima County's latest count of votes and now trails Republican Martha McSally by just 363 votes, according to Tucson Weekly. There are still 14,000 votes to be tabulated in the county, as well as 10,000 provisional ballots. Another 3,000 votes in Cochise county are still outstanding, the paper reports. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dcaee13f44a8ffbf61828fe0ba9d239312fee876d1375b35b4 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dcaee13f44a8ffbf61828fe0ba9d239312fee876d1375b35b4 CA-07: Former GOP Rep. Doug Ose's lead has shrunk to about 2,000 after Thursday's count, down from 3,000 over Democratic Rep. Ami Bera. In a defiant statement, Ose dismissed claims from the Bera camp that it was gaining momentum and poised to take the lead. There are still north of 60,000 ballots to be counted. CA-09: Democratic Rep. Jerry McNerney, who was expected to cruise to victory, is clinging to a roughly 2,500-vote lead over Republican Tony Amador, a former police officer and U.S. marshal, in the Stockton-based district. CA-16: Democratic Rep. Jim Costa, who trails Republican dairy farmer Johnny Tacherra by fewer than 800 votes, needs Fresno County to tilt toward him in a huge way or he may not be able to close the gap, the Fresno Bee reports. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc1cf0a82a0fc7bd3e21b47b20c2641d448d1fd26cd0a59302 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc1cf0a82a0fc7bd3e21b47b20c2641d448d1fd26cd0a59302 CA-17: Democratic Rep. Mike Honda has a 4,000-vote lead over intra-party challenger Ro Khanna. Khanna's campaign says there are more than 40,000 votes still to be counted. According to the San Jose Mercury-News, Honda increased his lead Wednesday night when Santa Clara County - home to the majority of the district's voters - updated its numbers. The other counties are set to update their figures Thursday night. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc96e438f68ee3a2b4101ecd779ddaf3bebcfc20949f0bc3ac http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc96e438f68ee3a2b4101ecd779ddaf3bebcfc20949f0bc3ac CA-26: Democratic Rep. Julia Brownley leads the GOP's Jeff Gorell by exactly 600 votes. In a statement, Gorell's campaign said there are "more than 50,000 absentee and provisional votes left to be counted." Ventura County is expected to update its vote count on Friday. CA-31: Republican Paul Chabot has conceded to Democratic Redlands Mayor Pete Aguilar. "While we came up short in today's updated numbers for the election, I could not be more proud of the campaign we have run," Chabot said in a statement. "I wish Pete Aguilar the best because much is at stake and we as Americans must come together now more than ever." The AP still hasn't called the race. CA-52: Democratic Rep. Scott Peters has inched in front of Republican Carl DeMaio in California's 52nd District, according to The Associated Press. Elections officials added roughly 12,700 votes today, with Peters moving from 49.7 percent of the vote to 50.3 percent. He now leads DeMaio in the two-way race by 861 votes, overcoming a 752-vote deficit before the update. The AP has still not declared a winner in the race. NY-25: Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter's lead narrowed slightly, from 651 votes to 582 votes. WA-4: Dan Newhouse, a former state agriculture director, maintained his lead over fellow Republican and former NFL tight end Clint Didier after Thursday's round of ballot counting. Newhouse's lead dropped as low as 1,699 but he ended the day more than 3,100 ahead, according to the Yakima Herald. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dca96546a4bb25d9b0f8b3239c972402fa6591adc6173c41f2 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dca96546a4bb25d9b0f8b3239c972402fa6591adc6173c41f2 Alaska governor: Independent Bill Walker has a 3,100-vote lead over incumbent Republican Sean Parnell. Alaska's elections board says about there are about 20,000 absentee ballots yet to be counted and more could still arrive before a Nov. 19 deadline. Vermont governor: Republican Scott Milne suggested Thursday that even though he trails Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin by about 2,100 votes, he may have won a majority of state legislative districts, WPTZ reports. That could be significant because the close race may ultimately be decided by the Legislature, under Vermont's unusual election law. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dca6c6d51f7b54438c6592853dfb5c4cedb6e0adab1d149c36 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dca6c6d51f7b54438c6592853dfb5c4cedb6e0adab1d149c36 Alaska Senate: Democratic Sen. Mark Begich is trailing Republican Dan Sullivan by 8,000 votes, but he's hoping those same 20,000 uncounted absentee ballots could help him claw back. Virginia Senate: Incumbent Democrat Mark Warner has a lead of nearly 17,000 votes, a closer-than-expected tally so far in his race against Republican Ed Gillespie. Counties in Virginia are canvassing the votes. State Democrats, including Attorney General Mark Herring and Rep. Gerry Connolly, have held on to their leads after recounts in similarly close races in recent years. RUNOFF ACTION - An update from the only ongoing Senate campaign: The Times Pic reports that Louisiana Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu and Republican Bill Cassidy have agreed so a single debate before their Dec. 6 runoff. The Dec. 1 matchup is just one of the six that Landrieu requested. Cassidy fired back that he'd hold an extra debate every time President Barack Obama visits the state - an unlikely prospect in a state where he's deeply unpopular. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc165f758e2c6e74c1bf54e69bfcfa9897f7a2bbc1ad289046 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc165f758e2c6e74c1bf54e69bfcfa9897f7a2bbc1ad289046 -- Per POLITICO's Maggie Haberman and James Hohmann: The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is canceling at least some of its advertising reservations for Sen. Mary Landrieu ahead of the December runoff in Louisiana. The committee canceled buys planned from Monday through December 6 in the Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans markets, three sources tracking the air war told POLITICO. With control of the Senate no longer on the line, the race becomes less important for both party committees - which each took out loans in the final weeks before Tuesday's election. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc1e27bc0185b2eb872172fd5619375b7cb4591abfb825a28c http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc1e27bc0185b2eb872172fd5619375b7cb4591abfb825a28c "GOP operatives take victory lap," by James Hohmann: "The operatives who led the National Republican Senatorial Committee to victory this week took a 100-minute victory lap on Thursday. They were most eager to criticize the Democrats' much-ballyhooed ground game and turnout operation. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spent the past nine months touting what it called The Bannock Street Project, a $60 million registration and turnout effort in 10 targeted states ... Republicans have already won in seven of the 10 states initially targeted by The Bannock Street project, and they are likely to win in two more - Alaska after all the votes are counted and Louisiana after a December runoff. "Republicans held the session with a small group of beat reporters to make sure that more of their behind-the-scenes efforts in winning the majority are known. 'A lot of people want to minimize it and say it was just a wave and say, "Congrats, you sat in the chair during a wave,"' said [NRSC Executive Director Rob] Collins. Also sitting in for the discussion were senior adviser Kevin McLaughlin; general counsel Megan Sowards; Finance Director Heather Larrison; and Jeff Larson, who ran the independent expenditure arm and has not been able to communicate with the others since March." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc21d5e7362c656685dd04fff9341141dd34201491c07c98ca http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc21d5e7362c656685dd04fff9341141dd34201491c07c98ca Here's POLITICO's Morning Score: your daily guide to the 2014 midterms. HOW HOGAN DID IT - By Campaign Pro's Kevin Robillard: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc7dc80a7ca2bb054cc03be589d173201ba7cf5c7509f27e13 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc7dc80a7ca2bb054cc03be589d173201ba7cf5c7509f27e13 THE AFTERMATH - Odds and ends from Election Day: -- Anthony Brown's loss in Maryland, coupled with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick's departure from office in January, ensures the nation will be without any black governors for the first time since 2006. -- Two of the three definitively ousted Senate incumbents are named Mark - Udall in Colorado and Pryor in Arkansas. Alaska's Mark Begich looks likely to be the third Mark booted from the Senate. The only surviving Mark? Virginia's Warner, who is facing the prospect of a recount against Republican Ed Gillespie after ending Election day with a 0.8-percentage-point lead. -- The defeat of Democrat Martha Coakley in Massachusetts, Mary Burke in Wisconsin and Wendy Davis in Texas, combined with the retirement of Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, guarantees that women won't see their ranks in governorships increase next year. Three Republican women (Nikki Haley of South Carolina, Mary Fallin of Oklahoma and Susana Martinez of New Mexico) and one Democratic woman (Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire) won reelection. The only woman newly elected governor? Democrat Gina Raimondo in Rhode Island. -- Per University of Minnesota political scientist and SmartPolitics blogger Eric Ostermeier: Republicans have failed to win a House election in Rhode Island in 22 straight tries, and Democrats set a record with their 20th win in a row in Connecticut. But Republicans ended an 18-race losing streak in Maine when Republican Bruce Poliquin beat Democrat Emily Cain. Those streaks, though, pale compared to the active 101-race winning streak for Democrats in Massachusetts. -- Democrats' losing streak in House races climbed to 22 cycles in Alaska and 20 in Wyoming, Ostermeier finds. But a win in Nebraska, with Brad Ashford defeating GOP Rep. Lee Terry, ends a 30-race losing streak there. DOWNBALLOT - "Dems lose big in statehouses, too," by Campaign Pro editor Steve Shepard: "Tuesday's Republican midterm wave also rippled across the nation's state governments, with the GOP grabbing three governorships and majorities in at least 10 new legislative chambers - further tightening their grip on the levers of power at the state level. Republicans will hold 31 of the country's 50 governorships next year ... They will also hold between 67 and 69 of the 98 partisan state legislative chambers - more than at any point in history, according to the Republican State Leadership Committee." ...Democrats insist that they are in position to win back many of these chambers in 2016, when more of their core voters - nonwhites, young voters, single women - are more likely to cast ballots. But they'll be starting at a historic deficit. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc777ec7672d84e616a9b8d9f1d2fe99991cfb4f6da572e4ac http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc777ec7672d84e616a9b8d9f1d2fe99991cfb4f6da572e4ac PIVOT TO 2016 - "Walden throws hat in for NRCC chair," by Lauren French: "Oregon Republican Rep. Greg Walden officially declared on Thursday his intention to seek a second term as National Republican Congressional Committee chair. In a letter sent to House Republicans, Walden - one of the architects of the GOP's landslide win in the midterms - said with Democrats already gearing up for 2016, Republicans need to aggressively protect their majority ... Walden's two top possible competitors - Reps. Roger Williams of Texas or Aaron Schock of Illinois - are unlikely to mount a campaign to unseat the Oregon Republican. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dccabb36cc165a9642a3d2621d2b8aa5454591fabeeb8e843a http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc663f5dd67db1076b96789db612ee191ce1319b5510bfa64d "Coons, Tester eye DSCC chairmanship," by Burgess Everett: "The contest to lead Senate Democrats' 2016 electoral offensive heated up on Thursday, as two contenders emerged for the chance to lead the offensive against Republican defending seats in blue states across the nation. Democratic Sens. Chris Coons of Delaware and Jon Tester of Montana are weighing runs for the chairmanship of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, their offices confirmed ... Though there are only days before next week's leadership election, neither is making as aggressive a play as Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) is for the Republican job. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc7ce5ba5a12f69f349a1175790dd349344e705e5a933f50be http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc7ce5ba5a12f69f349a1175790dd349344e705e5a933f50be EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY - "Report: Ernst aide quit after OWI arrest," by Katie Glueck: "A spokeswoman for incoming Sen. Joni Ernst's campaign was arrested last week on suspicion of drunken driving and resigned the next day, The Des Moines Register reported Thursday. Gretchen Hamel, an operative with Washington ties, was serving as a press contact for the Iowa Republican's campaign when she was arrested on Oct. 29 - about a week before Election Day - after West Des Moines police found her 'passed out behind the wheel of her vehicle after crossing lanes and driving her car over a curb,' the paper wrote, citing a police report.Ernst's campaign said she resigned the following morning. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc011f51d12f1fa0e3c5f91cd989b671d68d1e30ab47501e18 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc011f51d12f1fa0e3c5f91cd989b671d68d1e30ab47501e18 The Register report: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc7e651bf37929023a6618acbc2f844ea92381e945216e750d http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc7e651bf37929023a6618acbc2f844ea92381e945216e750d THURSDAY MORNING QUARTERBACKING - "Martinez Campaign Hit On All Cylinders," by Albuquerque Journal's James Monteleone: "Gov. Susana Martinez's 15-point reelection win over Democratic Attorney General King was the largest margin of victory ever for a Republican governor candidate in New Mexico, one political expert said Wednesday. The resounding win for the nation's first female Hispanic governor, who has been touted in some quarters as part of a national GOP ticket down the road, was driven by a good showing in Bernalillo County and her unusually strong performance in northern New Mexico's Democratic strongholds. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc298a487d32a15b0d256e179788d9d5988295f287ac923508 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc298a487d32a15b0d256e179788d9d5988295f287ac923508 CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "His oppo research file is pretty thick, and he hasn't even taken a vote yet." - A Democratic official on Glenn Grothman, the newly elected representatives from Wisconsin. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc21e8ad0163953496977e7a5d9ce69f6529a71691702211c7 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dc21e8ad0163953496977e7a5d9ce69f6529a71691702211c7 Go to POLITICO Morning Score Now >> http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dcac5f082d10429a1d05ab847d8726bf0b754b875da92277ef Go to this edition >> http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=ee3f6346daac47dcac5946e69bb2952b260dc8007d281fffe53f52adca81a0e0 ================================= 2014 POLITICO, LLC POLITICO Morning Score.
