Tuesday - April 1, 2014 From the School THIS WEEK'S QUERY How can individuals with differences form a community? NOTES FROM SALLY This week’s assembly: The New River Ensemble I hope that everyone had a restful break! I am interested in your comments about your son or daughter’s Minimester – please let me know if you have suggestions. 8th grade parents: Our rescheduled Conversations with Sally will be held next Tuesday morning, April 8th, at 7:45 AM. Please note a change in location: this will be held in the Rosenberg Theater. The entrance is off the lobby of the Arts Center, adjacent to the larger Caplin Theater. (This is the former small Quaker Meeting Room.) Thanks so much for the support for our winter linen and food drives! The Helping Hands Minimester group delivered 662 pounds of food to the Capital Area Food Bank and numerous bags of good, usable linens to A Wider Circle. Paws and Claws Minimester took the more “loved” linens to the Washington Animal Rescue League. Thanks to everyone for your generosity! Last month the Diversity Committee of the Middle School invited the faculty to “Diversity University,” a mini-conference designed and facilitated by the MS Diversity committee members. The goal of the conference was to ensure ongoing discussion of diversity, equity and justice in the MS. Faculty had an opportunity to attend two of five sessions offered: Exploring Affinity Groups; A Safe Place; Talking about Class; Holes in the Invisible Knapsack - Whose voice and what progress is lost when we focus on a single theory of white privilege?; and American Promise: Invitation to Dialogue. Feedback from our faculty was overwhelmingly positive about this inaugural event which the committee plans to offer next year! If you would like more information on the content of these topics, contact Julia Porter, MS Diversity Coordinator. The 5/6 A-ZSU met in March to share and discuss the ways in which different types of identities are portrayed in print and video (toys, commercials, TV shows, movies). Students shared their observations about whose “story” is represented in the media and discussed the role of bias. A reminder to all Middle School families: we will no longer be ordering 4 oz water bottles from the dining room for students to take with their bag lunches on field trips and service days. Students should plan to bring their own water bottle for those days. This is one way we can help with the issue of plastic waste! In addition to the second trimester grade reports which were posted on Educator during the week of Minimester, all parents should have received a paper copy of your child’s standardized test scores (CTPs) in the mail. There is an explanatory booklet posted on the Parent Portal which describes these tests. This link will take you there. The SFS Middle School National Geography Bee champ, Nikhil Nelson, has qualified for the DC State Finals this Thursday. We’ll be cheering for you, Nikhil – good luck! CHORAL MUSIC NOTES Boys Ensemble meets Wednesday before school and during 7/8 rehearsal period. Girls Ensemble meets Wednesday after school from 3:30 to 5pm. (Please note the earlier release time.) Grade 6 Ensemble meets Wednesday during 5/6 rehearsal period. FINAL MATH MEET OF THE YEAR - APRIL 9 Attention 6th – 8th grade parents: The last math meet of the year will take place next Wednesday, April 9, at Georgetown Day School. Students attending the meet will attempt to solve six challenging problems along with other students from area private schools. If your child wants to attend, he or she needs to let his or her math teacher know immediately. We are only allowed to take a limited number of students, so if the meet is oversubscribed, 7th and 8th graders will be given priority and a random lottery will determine which 6th graders (who signed up) will attend. The students will leave school at 2:15 pm and return to school around 4 – 4:15 pm at the garage. A snack is provided at the meet. This is a great way for your child to stretch his or her problem solving skills and meet students from other schools who share his or her love of math. "THE MIND OF THE ATHLETE" ON APRIL 16 Please join the Athletics Department and PA Athletics Committee in the Robert L. Smith Meeting room on April 16 from 7:30-9pm for a lecture on “The Mind of the Athlete” by sports psychologist Dr. Jarrod Spencer. Dr. Spencer’s passion is to assist athletes in attaining peak performance through sound emotional health. Dr. Spencer has a unique and provocative way of challenging us to re-think clearly and carefully about how we parent our young athletes. Dr. Spencer works with a number of professional, Olympic, college and high school athletes, coaches and teams and has served as the sports psychologist for athletic teams at the University of Maryland, Old Dominion University, Lehigh University and Lafayette College. For more information about this event, please contact Tony Mazlish.
