Tuesday - November 18, 2014 Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY Announcements FINANCIAL AID FOR 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR AMBASSADOR RASOOL SPEAKING ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND INCLUSION AUCTION BRAINSTORM PARTY: WEDS 11/19 MARK HYMAN ON FEB. 9 - CHILDREN AND ATHLETICS Other COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER SFS COMMUNITY SERVICE & A WIDER CIRCLE QUAKER QUOTE MS NEWSLETTER INFORMATION News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY This week’s query: How do you know when to draw the line between laughing at someone and laughing with someone? Assembly: Joe Odhiambo, Basketball trick star. This program will be in the Meeting Room. Today! Minimester trip applications are due. Lists will be out in early December, and information will be sent to the email addresses on the form, so please be sure that is correct. The email will include information about financial assistance. Also today: 5th – 8th graders : The first Math Olympiad competition will be held on from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm in Ms. Lamb’s room. The contest is open to everyone and students do not have to attend the 5/6 Math Club to participate. Parents are warmly invited to join us for Meeting for Worship on Thursday morning in the Meeting Room from 8:10 – 8:40. 8th grade Conversations with Michelle will be held on Friday morning at 8 :00 in the Rosenberg Theater in the Arts Center. Parents of 8th graders: In addition to the dance at Landon that I sent information about earlier, 8th graders are invited to a dance at Maret on Friday night. This winter dance is in the Old Gym, and admission is $5, student ID required. All 5th and 6th graders will rotate through health class during the winter season. There is a Health page in Haiku, to which parents have access, that contains information about the content of the course. If you have questions about the program, please contact our school nurse, Jasmin Whitfield. The first trimester ends at the end of the week. Schedules of special classes will change for 5th and 6th graders, and arts classes will change for 7th graders beginning on Monday, November 24th. First trimester reports will be issued before winter break. Just a note about the schedule for next week as we approach Thanksgiving: Monday and Tuesday will be regular school days. 7/8 students will have their A, B, and C classes on Monday and their D, E, and F classes on Tuesday. Aftercare will meet on Tuesday afternoon, and the Thanksgiving holiday will begin at the close of the day on Tuesday. 5/6 Math club will meet next Tuesday. A few reminders: students are not allowed to have their cell phones with them during the day. If you need to get a message to your son or daughter during the day, please do not text them – call the office, and we will get the message to them. Also, a reminder again to 7/8 parents that getting messages to students once they have left for PE is really difficult! Please contact us before 1:45 on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday and before 12:45 on Tuesday with any messages. We are approaching the concert season. 7/8 choral and instrumental groups will perform in December, and the 5/6 orchestra and 6th grade chorus will perform in January. For all concerts the dress requirements are as follows: Boys – black* pants, black* shoes, white dress shirt, any color tie. Girls - Black* pants or skirt, white top (must have sleeves) and black* shoes. (*or the darkest you own.) No tennis shoes please. A special club for the three Tuesdays in December: December Geography Bee Club - Tuesdays (December 2, 9, and 16) from 2-2:30 pm. If you are in grades 5-8 and enjoy learning about the United States and the world through geography (which encompasses every subject we study!), come just for the fun of it, or to practice up for the School Geography Bee, to be held in January. Practice questions, games, Internet sites, or just conversation are all possible. Mr. Salmon’s room, 201. If you will be in town over the holidays, SFS Alum Kenji Williams will have a program at Strathmore: Bella Gaia (Beautiful Earth.) This award-winning, immersive, live multimedia performance combines high-fidelity NASA images of Earth and stirring live performances of music and dance from around the world. The performance is Friday evening, November 28th. If you are interested, I can send a link for discounted tickets for the SFS community. SFS COMMUNITY SERVICE & A WIDER CIRCLE Make a Family's Holiday Wish Come True! For the 2014 holiday season, the Middle School Community Service Committee will be supporting A Wider Circle's gift giving program. This allows our families to adopt a family that is unable to purchase gifts for the holidays. Read on for how this experience impacted one Sidwell Friends family: This was one of the highlights of our family's holiday season last year! After receiving a detailed wish list, the four of us had so much fun putting gifts together for each member of our Wider Circle family. Our experience was made even more rich by getting to know the parent, a single mother in this case, and delivering the gifts to her apartment when her kids were away. It was a powerful opportunity to put ourselves in the place of those less fortunate and help make their holiday wishes come true. Please consider signing up or, if it feels like too big of a commitment, you may wish to partner with another Sidwell Friends family! If you're interested or have any questions, please contact Marjan via email or 202-664-4706. QUAKER QUOTE "God should be most where man is least: So, where is neither church nor priest, And never rag nor form of creed To clothe the nakedness of need,– Where farmer folk in silence meet,– I turn my bell-unsummoned feet; I lay the critic’s glass aside, I tread upon my lettered pride, And, lowest-seated, testify To the oneness of humanity; Confess the universal want, And share whatever Heaven may grant. He findeth not who seeks his own, The soul is lost that’s saved alone." ~Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-1892 ?Quaker Quotes are intended to deepen the understanding of Quakerism in the Sidwell Friends School community. Questions or suggestions may be directed to Cynthia Richie Terrell.
