year's Paws & Pinups calendar raised over $4,000 which helped provide much needed
medical care for our animals and purchased supplies needed to increase the number
of dogs we could house at the newly opened Homeward Trails Adoption Center.

The Paws & Pinups calendar spotlights DC-area ladies who are passionate about animal
rescue, adoption and fostering. All the pets that appear in the calendar were
adopted or rescued. 100% of the proceeds from calendar sales are donated to Homeward
Trails

Sponsor An Animal...Save a Life...

Our HT animal sponsor program features

but a few of the hundreds of animals HomewardTrails is asked to rescue each week.

Sponsor animals like Veronica and Apollo who were rescued as part of a puppy mill
bust

Space and

money are our greatest barriers to saying yes to each request.

As a supporter of HT, you can help a great deal by making a donation [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0015pEt-vp0mJ52rl-WNZw6k8n_5l3ToU5GclOawTRFe4mzq_8M_RmfX3ANPAIV0mxeQblrBA1kipHjjzdUm2_m1JJxfUvK0mkfLxfzEiIOmCjT7B53gH7nZUJ64KFce4lnwxfoY63JNCPzT5pthZzGje-JjmUA-6GhggMNJLiJSqRmNY9FUvO5r1JPwcWN5gakcizbkFfX6qyWvWoB4qg1IGazIj0KBWQwnu_r1ZJh1b1XIz8zmyHTOSasoVz61TAV&c=WmZO6z6oqgH2d56buudcCvmc_0Z4M1Y7Y1NFdunOt-fzBvNSqrlrTg==&ch=9gvH6EzW2ZbCFRLwUJdE3P5GT3t9P-FZR38P5i7eihbbOCwzRiHiDg==]
to offset the costs to rescue one of these animals.

On average, it costs approximately $150 to rescue each dog and $100 to rescue each
cat. This includes basic vet care provided by the shelters, fuel for transport,
staff time, additional vaccines and housing once they arrive at HT.

We are now offering our wonderful family of HT supporters the opportunity to donate

Every donation saves the life of a specific animal ... and any donations greater
than the amount needed will be applied to others in need.

Please, consider a tax-deductible donation today to help these animals. They deserve
a 2nd chance at life. And together, we can give them that.

Heartbreaking Rescue of Three "Littles"
Tossed on roadside.....Their Miraculous Rescue

Minutes after their rescue...starving and cold

These little dogs have had one rough life. Little Bit, Little Man, and Little Dude
were found by a good samaritan driving down the road on her way to work in rural
West Virginia. She saw a crate in the ditch, and thought someone had lost it off
the back of a vehicle and drove on.
But something told her to turn around and look...and thank goodness she did.

Wet, cold, covered in filth and feces, these Littles had been horribly neglected.

In the crate were these three dogs, covered in feces, frozen water and filth. Just
the night before, the area had heavy rains and the temperature was in the 30's!
The Littles were soaking wet after spending the entire night on the side of the
road. By their condition it was clear they had been locked in the crate for a long,
long time.

Despite this horrendous ordeal, the Littles are sweet little snuggle bugs with amazing
personalities. They get along great with all people and other dogs. All three of
them are suffering from ear infections, skin infections and wounds from being tossed
aside and forced to live in urine.

All three dogs need ongoing care in order to continue to heal and improve. They
need multiple vet visits to care for their painful and severe ear infections,
and Little Dude's skin needs to be monitored for infection. Please help us offset
the cost of their medical bills so we can heal them and get them ready for their
new lives!!

Help The Littles... A Trip to Moscow Gives Hope to Suffering Animals.....
Two weeks ago, HT Executive Director Sue Bell and longtime HT volunteer Shana Aufenkamp
traveled to Moscow to assist an ailing rescuer who was faced with potentially losing
her home and having no place for more than 30 rescued kitties.

Investigation Finds Dozens of VA Pet Stores Selling Puppy Mill Puppies

These two cuties arrived at HT last week from a puppy mill bust.

A vital investigation [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0015pEt-vp0mJ52rl-WNZw6k8n_5l3ToU5GclOawTRFe4mzq_8M_RmfXwfsE0g3DX1YAiI-aVoqC410U_pbxYf_RYnOTeh-iz3Q-LttDmDPtRwLdB-MJimzezrF96tF6yoD0zspRDGgLBCcYLmnI4yPQpQ5wIQBSTGysq8VvCDsRXa7gwM5fflTZ87b-fI8udlP4XcD6vt3jrsdcAYG8hsxlL5qtwHknfaugNeV7oczZiHR85tFCXopsIeKRlsjV73s_o_4ePNXR0b4Bfp-ZPkxVzUPR0UciuQJ&c=WmZO6z6oqgH2d56buudcCvmc_0Z4M1Y7Y1NFdunOt-fzBvNSqrlrTg==&ch=9gvH6EzW2ZbCFRLwUJdE3P5GT3t9P-FZR38P5i7eihbbOCwzRiHiDg==]conducted
by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) recently found that thousands
of puppies being sold in pet stores,

Puppy mills abuse thousands of animals annually....just to make money.

including those in nearby Fairfax, VA came from puppy mills with known and documented
USDA violations.
HT has been working with local elected officials for the last two years on this
issue, hoping to see more restrictions put in place to deter pet stores from opening.
With the passage of Bailey's Law [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=0015pEt-vp0mJ52rl-WNZw6k8n_5l3ToU5GclOawTRFe4mzq_8M_RmfXwfsE0g3DX1YVgICVN5a6IO-Q5VIGLNA970KqyNEoWQktLLZIt5dGsKYqncSFZa9yjiBFneZ3GME_YudsFZcrhLHvgpWnd2LmQQjEVFjO8T1tqQdVECT__xc5jvH256H6Krj6NE86GbgS_6AqwBf09vma_Bz2WXnAyrfW7RtNf5lrMkLrlp2P7DFXBJAVdRLVtKWzODMnAeNs7dDNqCj80Y=&c=WmZO6z6oqgH2d56buudcCvmc_0Z4M1Y7Y1NFdunOt-fzBvNSqrlrTg==&ch=9gvH6EzW2ZbCFRLwUJdE3P5GT3t9P-FZR38P5i7eihbbOCwzRiHiDg==]in
Virginia in 2014, we had hoped to see pet stores operating more responsibly. We
now know that this law is not making much of a difference. The only answer is to
push for legislation that prohibits the selling of puppies from puppy mills.
Please contact us at info@homewardtrails.org if you would like to get involved.
Much of this work must be done at the local level. You can make a difference!

It's COLD...don't turn a blind eye to animals suffering...
There are many ways to help animals you see suffering in the cold. Please, don't
ignore it. You can do something.
**If you see a chained dog or a dog left outside in a yard, contact local Animal
Control. You may have to call many times. Take photos to document the neglect...especially
when water bowls freeze and the housing is inadequate.
**Consider building a simple, affordable shelter for an outdoor kitty. Provide dry
food for outdoor kitties as giving them food helps them ultimately keep warm.
*Also watch your own pets when it's icy out as their paws and pads can quickly become
frozen...and be extra careful when salt is applied as it burns and cuts their feet
often resulting in painful injuries. Look for booties!
