A note from Ted and Brooke: With two weeks left in the season, we wanted to give everyone a prelude to our remaining races. All three are championship regattas. The first, this Saturday at the Occoquan , is for freshmen and novice crews. Next Saturday we will return with the experienced rowers for the VASRA Championships. And then on Thursday, May 19 th the whole team will travel to Philadelphia for the Stotesbury Cup Regatta. All three of these regattas, because they are championships, have stricter rules about entry categories and limitations which do not permit athletes to row in more than one event. Historically, this puts challenges on how we enter our team and this year is no exception. While all the boatings have not been finalized, we wanted to share some of the guiding principles we are using as we work out our entries. To remind everyone, this season, assuming full attendance at every regatta, we have 29 on the team. For those that like Sudoku or logic puzzles, this breaks down to 7 novice rowers (6 freshmen and 1 sophomore), 18 experienced rowers (9 of whom are seniors), and 4 coxswains (2 of whom are seniors, 1 junior and 1 novice sophomore) to fit into 3 eights. We will leave out the mix of who rows port, who rows starboard and who can row both sides. Simplified it means that at Stotesbury we will have one spare rower and one spare coxswain. As we finish off the season, our goal will be to ensure that every rower and every coxswain competes in one of the remaining regattas in which they are eligible. Additionally, we hope to create an opportunity for all the seniors to compete in Philadelphia which will be their last races for Sidwell Friends. Here is how we will be entered in the remaining 3 races: · This weekend at the Ted Phoenix Regatta, we will be racing a Novice 4 because of the interaction of the regatta rules and the make-up of our roster. · At the VASRA Championships, we will race two eights, a first and second varsity. All experienced rowers and families need to be aware that because of a change this year, there is a strong chance that there will be qualifying events on Friday, May 13 th in the late afternoon. We will not know the details until Monday or Tuesday of next week as to whether this will indeed happen and whether either of our boats will need to compete in a qualifier. If you know this will create a conflict for your daughter, please have them let us know ASAP. We know nobody wants to go south on I-95 on a Friday afternoon but there are prom dresses to be found at Potomac Mills if that is any incentive! · Lastly, at Stotesbury , we will race three eights: a senior eight, a junior eight, and second eight. Stotesbury entries are determined by grade level which dictated how we have entered and to some degree who will compete in which event. For the novices, it will mean that they will be rowing up a level in competitiveness. Travel and logistical details for the Philadelphia trip will come out as we get closer to the event. We hope this is helpful. Let’s hope for less rain and lower river levels for the remaining practices and races! Ted and Brooke A note about tomorrow's crinner : The crinner tomorrow night is for novices only. While a ll novices are expected to attend the crinner tomorrow at 6pm , only those novices who are rowing Saturday need to be at TBC beforehand to rig the boat. The crinner will be held at the Bessalel home 5107 Lawton Drive Bethesda, MD 20816 301-320-7577 Appetizers to feed 4 provided by Hefter Sandri Green or fruit salad to feed 4 provided by Kirstein Webb Dessert to feed 4 provided by Green Williams Walker
