Dear Friends,

For 25 years Career Transition For Dancers has been refining its
place within the dance community. During those years, we have
learned some lessons: dancers are resilient and inventive; the
transition process looks different for each individual and should be
handled accordingly; and the moment you think you've got it all
right, there is more to learn. The growth of this organization's
programs and services are highly affected by two communities; the
needs and demands from our dancer-clients and the support from our
patrons and trustees. With essential partnerships in these two
communities, we continue to create innovative programs as we balance
articulating our role and relevance to the world of dance.

This issue of Moves-Stories of Transition is about obtaining success
and balance. In preparation for this issue, we asked ourselves what
does success and balance mean for our organization? Is success
obtained statistically? Do we only define it by the 4,837 hours of
career counseling provided to 2,923 dancer-clients equal to a dollar
value of $532,070 in 2010 by dancers served across 47 states or
knowing that during 2010, Career Transition For Dancers provided 643
dancer-clients with a total of 1,251 hours of one-on-one career
counseling (including CareerLine counseling) with an estimated value
of $137,610; or, is it the 322 hours of group counseling to 161
dancer-clients with an estimated value of $35,420. Or that Career
Transition For Dancers conducted seven National Outreach Projects -
Palm Beach, FL attended by 35 dancers; Austin, TX attended by 129
dancers; Nashville, TN attended by 113 dancers; Cleveland, OH
attended by 165 dancers; Las Vegas, NV attended by 270 dancers,
Charleston, SC attended by 68 dancers; and New Orleans, LA attended
by 95 dancers; in total serving 875 dancer-clients ? Or is it the
$447,503 in awards to 237 dancer-clients for educational scholarships
and entrepreneurial and certification grants? We asked if this was
how we defined success or if success is found in each individual
dancer-client story we share with you every month. Maybe it's the
combination of the two. It is possible that we obtain our balance by
striving to improve access to a larger number of dancers while
remembering that the heart of what we do is found in every individual
story?

Secondly, we asked 'what is balance?' Does this mean we are to
specialize in every aspect of a dancers' life or are we to build
bridges and an effective network of experts to address the needs of
our dancer-clients? Also, what are the areas of growth for the
organization? Are our dancer-clients asking for more career
counseling hours, larger scholarships or more ways to access our
knowledgebase? If the answer is yes (which it is); how do we balance
these needs within our budget size?

of her future.

Ann Marie DeAngelo was pegged by Backstage as "a multiple career
artist" with her expertise as a Producer, Director, Choreographer,
and Coach. Her dance career with The Joffrey Ballet spanned 10
years, and she later became the company's Associate Director. Before
that, she was the founding Artistic Director of Ballet de Monterrey
(1990), and of her own experimental company, which toured Europe
extensively in the late 1980s.

She has been the producer and director for numerous Gala benefit
evenings for Career Transition For Dancers, at New York City Center
in NYC. Ann Marie has taught at many universities, summer dance
programs, and schools, and has been movement coach to Bette Midler.
She holds a certificate in Arts Administration from New York
University.She has been the producer and director for seven Gala
benefit evenings for Career Transition For Dancers, at City Center in
NYC.

commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service.
