NO REAL SURPRISE HERE ... CAPITOL HILL is decidedly skeptical about North Korea denuclearizing.

-- SPEAKER PAUL RYAN: "For decades, American policy toward North Korea has failed, and I commend the president for not accepting the status quo. As negotiations now advance, there is only one acceptable final outcome: complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization. We must always be clear that we are dealing with a brutal regime with a long history of deceit. Only time will tell if North Korea is serious this time, and in the meantime we must continue to apply maximum economic pressure. The road ahead is a long one, but today there is hope that the president has put us on a path to lasting peace in the Korean peninsula."

-- SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS CHAIRMAN BOB CORKER (R-TENN.): "While I am glad the president and Kim Jong Un were able to meet, it is difficult to determine what of concrete nature has occurred. I look forward to having Secretary Pompeo before our committee soon to share his insights and look forward to carrying out our oversight responsibilities."

-- HOUSE MINORITY LEADER NANCY PELOSI (D-CALIF.): "In his haste to reach an agreement, President Trump elevated North Korea to the level of the United States while preserving the regime's status quo."

-- HOUSE FOREIGN AFFAIRS CHAIRMAN ED ROYCE (R-CALIF.): "I look forward to a detailed briefing from the administration on the talks and any specific commitments North Korea has made toward denuclearization. Congress has an important oversight role in this process. Throughout, we must press Beijing and others to continue complying fully with all sanctions against the North Korean regime. Kim Jong Un should not receive a dime of relief until he fully and verifiably denuclearizes."

ALSO ... It's going to be tough to remove troops from South Korea. CNN'S MANU RAJU (@mkraju): "Sen. Roy Blunt, a member of Senate GOP leadership, was cautious about the North Korea talks, telling us 'we may have started on a path to denuclearization.' But he added that: 'I'd be concerned about any discussion about removing troops from Korea.'"

... FROM SEN. MARCO RUBIO (R-FLA.) -- @marcorubio: "Should be skeptical of any deal with #KJU Limits to future strategic weapons instead of eliminating current program not an acceptable outcome. -- ON NORTH KOREA: "To have North Korea -- Kim Jong Un -- say that he commits to denuclearize, that's an important step. Now let's go and follow through on it."

-- ON ENDING WAR GAMES: "I think the military presence in South Korea is still going to be maintained ... [President Trump] said he wants to bring them home, but that he's not going to bring them home until he gets a true, verifiable denuclearization. And so as long as you got the troops there, I think what they are talking about -- what these war games are -- actual attempts [or] training exercises to invade North Korea. I don't think anyone is expecting an invasion of North Korea, but the military presence remains."

-- HE'S 'HOPEFUL' THE DISCHARGE PETITION WILL FADE AWAY: "I don't want to see a discharge petition and I've been working actively to stop it. ... I don't think they're going to get a discharge petition. You just saw [Rep. Dennis Ross (R-Fla.)] come out saying he won't sign a discharge petition. I know that I talked -- and other members of our leadership team talked -- to Dennis about his concerns. I think it was important that he -- and others that we have spoken to -- that were going to sign ultimately didn't sign the discharge petition. ... I am very hopeful it won't happen tonight."

-- HIS CASE FOR MCCARTHY FOR SPEAKER: "He's got a very good relationship with President Trump. As majority leader you can see the bills. He schedules the floor, and we've moved I think a very strong agenda through the House. ... Kevin and I worked very closely to put those coalitions together to pass that agenda forward."

-- SCALISE DEFINITIVELY RULES OUT RUNNING FOR LA GOV in 2019: "No." JAKE: "Period. No way?" SCALISE: "No! ... Are you going to run?" Jake is not running, either!
