Fukushima talks The board of governors for the International Atomic Energy Association meets in Vienna to discuss the nuclear reactor crisis in Japan (until May 5). Iran and North Korea will also be on the agenda. South American bloc The leaders of Peru, Chile, Colombia and Mexico meet to discuss further economic integration and the creation of new trade bloc. Met puts on the ritz The Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art Costume Institute holds its “Party of the Year” benefit gala, celebrating the work of Alexander McQueen. Its exhibition on the late British fashion designer opens on Wednesday. Renewable energy growth The four-day International Biomass Conference and Expo in St Louis, Missouri, focuses on issues for biological-based power, thermal energy, fuels and chemicals. EU agriculture meeting The agriculture and rural development committee meets in Brussels to discuss the common agricultural policy, rural development finance and raw material supply. Tuesday MAY 3 Toyota cuts UK production Production at Toyota’s Derbyshire plant will be suspended two days a week during May, and production cut by about half on the other three days, due to supply problems after the tsunami in Japan. Prince in Washington Prince Charles begins a three-day trip to the US in Washington, where he is due to meet Barack Obama, the president. Art up for auction Pablo Picasso’s 1934 work “Femmes Lisant” is to be sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York for an estimated price of $25m-$35m. Other works on offer include the Paul Gauguin bust “Jeune Tahitienne”, sculpted during his first trip to Tahiti in 1890. Valuation on the house Bonhams auctioneers begins its first “open house” one-day event with more than 20 specialists offering free valuations of art to the public at its Knightsbridge saleroom. Football semi-finals Barcelona and Real Madrid meet in the second leg of the European Champion’s League semi-final at the Camp Nou in Barcelona. Manchester United play FC Schalke 04 in the second semi-final on Wednesday. Ethical business The Ethical Corporation holds its two-day Responsible Business Summit Europe on sustainability and corporate responsibility in London. Wednesday MAY 4 MPs probe North Sea tax Chris Huhne, UK energy secretary, will answer questions from the Energy and Climate Change committee on the windfall tax on North Sea oil and its impact on exploration, production, jobs, exports, investors and petrol prices. EU biodiversity drive The European Commission launches its 2020 strategy to halt the decline of the ecosystem, focusing on the sustainability of agriculture, fisheries and forestry, and controlling invasive alien species. Africa’s growth challenge The three-day World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town discusses the challenges facing the continent in channelling growth into sustained development through infrastructure, urban design and education. Chicago Fed gathering The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago debates the Dodd-Frank financial reforms at its conference on bank structure and competition (until May 6). Thursday MAY 5 UK votes on voting Britain holds a referendum on replacing the “first past the post” system in general elections with an alternative vote, with the result expected on Friday. Polls also take place for the Scottish parliament and the Northern Irish and Welsh Assemblies. Republican campaign starts The first US Republican presidential primary debate of the 2012 campaign takes place in South Carolina, an important early state in the party’s nominating process. Libya contact group Arab and western nations meet in Rome to discuss action in Libya, with the no-fly zone, Nato air strikes and the military situation on the agenda. Asean-EU opportunities The Asean-EU Business Summit starts in Jakarta, Indonesia, to bring together entrepreneurs and investors from across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the European Union. Foodie paradise The fourth Real Food Festival gets under way at Earls Court in London (until May 8) with the focus on local production and sustainability, and the environment. Friday MAY 6 Future of VAT in the EU The European Commission debates its 2010 green paper about forming a simpler, more robust and efficient value added tax system, bringing together policymakers, stakeholders and the public in Milan. Global conflict summit The International Institute for Strategic Studies hosts its second geoeconomic strategy summit over two days in Bahrain. Saturday MAY 7 Derby day for Kentucky The biggest horserace in the US, the Kentucky Derby, takes place in Louisville. Singapore goes to polls The ruling People’s Action party, led by Lee Hsien Loong, prime minister, is expected to face its toughest challenge in decades from historically weak opposition in the country’s general election.
