JVC Northwest Recommends Below are things being discussed in the JVC Northwest community. Do you have a blog, book, movie, podcast, song, poem, article, etc. you want to share? Email Amy. "30 lines below the famous quote 'All men are created equal' the Declaration of Independence refers to Natives as 'merciless Indian savages.'” For centuries white Americans and Native Americans have had vastly different experiences of Independence Day. In The Dilemma of the Fourth of July, Navajo tribal member Mark Charles explores this gap and invites us to end our day of celebrations with a prayer for common memory. “This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn." Jenn M. Jackson's My Conflicted Feelings on the Fourth of July, describes how her experience of this holiday, like most Black Americans, has been a complicated mix of nostalgic childhood memories, an awareness of the systemic racism she and her ancestors have lived through, and how those two things influence what observing this holiday means today.
