Gillard visits China Julia Gillard, Australia’s prime minister, visits Beijing (until April 27). She will meet President Hu Jintao and her counterpart Wen Jiabao for trade talks. Malaria under attack Today is designated World Malaria Day by the World Health Organisation, which is launching further initiatives in pursuit of its goal of eradicating deaths from the disease by 2015. Irish Grand National run The Irish Grand National horse race is run at the Fairyhouse track. Tuesday APRIL 26 Denmark hosts Putin Vladimir Putin, Russia’s prime minister, is due to visit Denmark for talks with his counterpart Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Libya report for UN The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to receive a report by the International Criminal Court on Libya. Chernobyl anniversary The 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the world’s worst, is marked. Turkish-Arab forum meets The two-day Turkish-Arab Economic Forum takes place in Istanbul, attended by business leaders and government delegates. UK parliament returns Both houses of the UK parliament, the Commons and the Lords, resume after the Easter recess. Soccer probe quizzes Uefa The UK parliament’s culture, media and sport committee continues its inquiry into football governance, taking evidence from Uefa, the game’s European governing body, and Hugh Robertson, UK minister for sport. Olympic ticket sales close Applications for tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Games close. Nigerians vote again Nigeria is due to hold its governorship and state assembly elections, following Goodluck Jonathan’s victory in the presidential poll this month. Entertainment event The Palme trade show, the Middle East’s professional audio, lighting, music and entertainment technologies event, begins in Dubai (until April 28). IT opportunities for Africa How information and communications technology can help deliver public services is the subject of the E-Gov Africa Forum in Yaoundé, Cameroon (until April 28). Wednesday APRIL 27 Future of Latin America The three-day World Economic Forum on Latin America in Rio de Janeiro considers the region’s vast economic resources, and how infrastructure, environmental policies and security need to be improved to fulfil its growth potential. US aviation chiefs gather Aviation executives gather in Washington for the Annual Aviation Summit, staged by the US Chamber of Commerce. The event will explore the need to improve aviation infrastructure and invest in innovative technologies. Anti-corruption conference A two-day conference to discuss ways of tackling corruption in business opens in Paris, organised by the Group of 20 leading economies and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Diseases combated The World Health Organisation holds a global forum in Moscow on combating non-communicable diseases. The city also hosts over the next two days the WHO’s ministerial conference on healthy lifestyles and non-communicable disease control. New Zealand surveyed An economic survey of New Zealand is published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Rivals on European stage Real Madrid and Barcelona, the arch rivals of Spanish football, play the first leg of their European Champions League semi-final in Madrid. Thursday APRIL 28 Environment business Leading international companies and campaign groups take part in the Business for the Environment Global Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia (until April 29), Delegates will discuss sustainable business practices and commercial “green” opportunities. Friday APRIL 29 Royal wedding holiday The wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton takes place at Westminster Abbey, London. The day is a national holiday in the UK. BBC Trust chair changes Sir Michael Lyons steps down as chairman of the BBC Trust. He is succeeded by Lord Patten, the chancellor of Oxford University and former governor of Hong Kong. Energy security discussed A European Union conference on energy supply security is held in Pécs, Hungary. Saturday APRIL 30 Climate of corruption Transparency International launches its annual Global Corruption Report in Dhaka, Bangladesh. This year it focuses on corruption risks in tackling climate change. New Bundesbank president Jens Weidmann succeeds Axel Weber as president of Deutsche Bundesbank, Germany’s central bank. Guineas on the race card The two-day Guineas Festival, featuring two classics of the UK flat race season, takes place at Newmarket: the 2,000 Guineas today and the 1,000 Guineas on Sunday.
