Dear Friends, I know I have shared with many of you the constellation of vulnerabilities that my son Oliver faces each day and my pursuit to provide him with the best educational and therapeutic services. But, I wanted to reach out to each of you personally to briefly share our journey and , in turn, ask for your support. Like all mothers feel -- Oliver's birth was a miracle -- his little body was so soft and warm and I think of the first time I held him and kissed his face--his sweet aroma--that newborn baby smell fresh of promise and innocence. If only I could have kept that emotion in a jar to be opened from time to time to help remember a simpler time in his life. Instead my days are filled with doctor appointments, specialized therapists, special educators and endless "positive parenting" which is the new name behavior modification. At night, I surf the net reading everything I can find on pervasive development disabilities. I spend hours researching strategies and interventions for a cure. Joel and I knew before Oliver was 1 years old that something was amiss. Since then and every day we do everything in our power to provide him with unconditional love and support. In pursuit of providing Oliver with the best early early intervention services we enrolled him at the Reginald S. Lourie Center in Rockville , MD. Oliver is only 4 yrs old, but in his second year there. We are so fortunate to have found the Lourie Center. There are no other licensed therapeutic nursery schools in Maryland or the DC metro area for children with social, emotional and educational challenges. (They offer more services than just the nursery school.) This is why I am reaching out to you. This year I am co-chairing the Center's benefit reception on May 11th. And I am very excited to tell you that it is going to be amazing! I wanted to mix things up, change the typical venue and engage more of our generation. So lets call it a "cocktail party" because there will not be a long seated dinner with lots of drawn out speeches in a stayed room. Instead, it is on the top floor of the new and fabulous Room & Board building on 14th Street. I promise it is totally cool! And, we have a really exciting guest this year!!! I cannot write her name in this email until all communications are cleared with the White House. But she is smart, beautiful, committed to education and my sister's mother-in-law :)!!!! So now I need YOU! I am forming a Junior Committee for the Benefit and I hope that you will join me. I am only asking that you attend the event (your ticket will be at a reduced cost), bring at least one new friend with you, and share your enthusiasm for the Lourie Center!!!! Please say yes and join my Junior Committee. Let's have a drink together, share some laughs and covet the beautiful classic contemporary home furnishings of Room & Board while we support an amazing organization! Proceeds from the benefit continue to help the Lourie Center meet the needs of the little ones and families in there care, many who cannot afford services like Oliver receives. I truly appreciate any support you may give. Please let me know by responding to this email. Sincerely and Much Love, Liz Liz Secundy (302) 530-0600 =2
