Truman National Security Project ! This month, Truman welcomed new members of Congress and advocated for an end to the partial government shutdown. In addition, Truman interim Executive Director Bishop Garrison spoke out in favor of the For the People Act.


Camille Stewart

Camille Stewart is a cyber and technology attorney with substantial business, legal, and policy experience. She brings specialized, crosscutting perspective to bear on complex technology, cyber, national security, and foreign policy issues. Currently, she is at Google, focusing on policy for the company's mobile platforms. Previously, Stewart worked at Deloitte, where she was a cyber risk manager leading the election security, cyber innovation, and cybersecurity programs. She has also previously served as the Senior Policy Advisor for Cyber Infrastructure and Resilience Policy at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the Obama Administration; in this role, she focused on a number of domestic and international cyber and technology policy issues. Prior to working at DHS, Stewart
spent five years as the Senior Manager, Legal Affairs at Cyveillance, Inc., which is a cybersecurity company focused on open source threat intelligence and incident response. She also founded a legal consultancy and startup incubator, MarqueLaw, PLLC.


Stewart is a New America Cyber Policy Fellow, Security Fellow with Truman National Security Project, and Council on Foreign Relations Term Member. She is a 2018 New America Top 35 Black American National Security and Foreign Policy Next Generation Leader, the 2018 National Urban League Cyber Connoisseur Honoree, a 2017 DMV 40 under 40 Trailblazer Awardee, and the 2016 Women in Technology Rising Star Awardee.

The Government Shutdown
In late December, the government entered what would become the longest partial shutdown in history due to President Trump’s demand for more than $5 billion to build an ineffective, immoral wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Truman released message guidance to our community and allies denouncing the situation, emphasizing that the shutdown was of the administration’s own making and that the wall will do nothing to keep us safe. USA Today , and Truman interim Executive Director Bishop Garrison appeared on MSNBC to advocate for federal workers and call for Congress pass existing legislation to reopen the government.

Reception for New Members of Congress
On 09 January, Truman joined Council for a Livable World, Foreign Policy 4 America, and JStreet to welcome 24 new members of Congress.

New members, incumbents, board members, and donors from all organizations joined the event at Sonoma, which was anchored by a speaking program that included leaders from each host organization as well as select members of Congress with experience in foreign policy and national security. The more than 100 attendees included Congressmen Jason Crow (D-CO) and Mike Levin (D-CA), who are both also Truman Political Partners. Also in attendance were Congresspersons Andy Kim (D-NJ), Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Sharice Davids (D-KS), and Jennifer Wexton (D-VA), as well as incumbent Congresspersons Joaquin Castro (D-TX), David Cicilline (D-RI), Anthony Brown (D-MD), and Rose DeLauro (D-CT).
