Message from Lee

Dear Friends,

We’re almost finished with exams and preparing to begin second semester – time flies!

Collection next week will be in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Upper School will be viewing a portion of the film Brother Outsider about the “life and work of Bayard Rustin—a visionary strategist and activist who has been called 'the unknown hero' of the civil rights movement.” For more information, please go to http://rustin.org/.

The College Counseling Kickoff Meeting for 11th grade students and their parents will take place at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 18 in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. The January College Counseling Newsletter is now available on the website.

The GLSBT Dance will be on Friday, January 20 at 8:00 pm in the AC Theater.

As always, please report any medical issues, large or small, relating to your child to Jasmin Whitfield, MS/US Nurse and Shannon Fooks, Athletic Trainer. These include possible concussions, hospitalizations, changes in medication, etc. When in doubt, please err on the side of letting us know of any change so that we can determine how best to support your child. Your child’s health and well-being always comes first but if there is flexibility in scheduling, it is in his or her best interests to miss as little school as possible. We know that doctors and dentists often must see patients during the school day, but please do your best to try to schedule non-emergency medical, dental, and/or orthodontic appointments so that your child will miss as few classes as possible. If missing classes is unavoidable, please try to make appointments so your child does not miss the same class repeatedly.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions about any aspect (large or small) of the Upper School. I count on your feedback!

China Trip - Summer 2012

Sidwell Friends School Summer 2012 Grassroots China Fieldwork Course: Histories of China through the cultural landscapes of Xizhou, Yunnan, will run from July 1 – July 29, 2012. The cost for the one-semester credit course trip is $5,600 (all inclusive). Financial aid is available for this trip.

The Mark Watson Eager ’74 Summer Challenge grant will be offered again for juniors. The grant covers a portion (up to $4,000) of a three to four week outdoor summer excursion undertaken by a Sidwell junior. Student who wish to apply for the grant should submit their applications to Lee Palmer by Monday, January 23. More information is attached.

11th Grade Family Service Project - Sunday, January 22 -- Note time changes

Our objective: All 11th graders and their families will take part in a project to serve warm, home-cooked food and to distribute toiletries and clothing to the homeless.

Time: Sunday, January 22, 8:15 am (set-up), 9:00 am (food service) to 11:45 am

Place: the plaza in front of DC’s Martin Luther King Library, at 901 G Street, NW (near Gallery Place Metro). Students not on the set-up crew should arrive at 9 am and will be assigned tasks at that time.

For those who cannot attend Sunday: we are looking for students to assemble the donated items after school on Friday, January 20, from 2:30-5:30 pm — room to be announced.

ArtRageous: call for Performers and Parent Volunteers

Performers -- it's not too late! If you are a troubadour who loves to sing, a dancer who loves to prance, a magician with a few tricks up your sleeves, or a band that has got its groove on, please contact Maude Fish at maude.fish@comcast.net and let her know of your interest in performing at ArtRageous on Sunday, January 29. Please send her the following information: your name; your grade; what you will perform and who it's by; and any accompanist or audio/visual equipment needs. Maude Fish will get back to you as to your performance time and place (and will try to accommodate your scheduling needs). Don't be late for an important date -- ArtRageous 2012 is just around the corner.

Additional P.A. Arts Committee Meeting: Thursday, 1/12

An ADDITIONAL Parents Association Arts Committee Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 12, from 7:30-9:00 pm to plan for ArtRageous 2012. The meeting will take place in the Upper School Library Meeting Room. This 1/12 meeting is in addition to the meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 26th. Many Sidwell students already have signed up to participate, and there remains important planning to make all things flourish at ArtRageous 2012, so we look forward to seeing you there.
Save your Boxes - Boxopolous is back at Artrageous! Back by popular demand...

Have boxes left over from the holidays? Just moved and don’t know what to do with your boxes? Here’s the answer: donate them to Boxopolous. This is a wonderful, fun, creative activity during Artrageous on Sunday, January 29 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Kids of all ages (adults too) can build anything they would like out of the boxes. The sky’s the limit!

We will also collect toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls for our new totem pole project. Feel free to drop them before Artrageous or bring them with you. Stay tuned for the drop off date/time at the Upper School campus (to be announced), but if you have boxes to unload before then, please contact Allison Tierney at atierney427@gmail.com and she will arrange for the drop off.
All-School PA Meeting: Monday, Jan. 23, 7:00 pm

January 23 PA Meeting Topic: ‘Of the Best Sort but Plain’: An Exploration of Quaker Aesthetics in American Art and Architecture.

Please join Sidwell Friends parent and art historian Amy Henderson for a discussion of Quaker aesthetics in the new Upper School Meeting House on Monday, January 23, from 7:00-9:00 pm. Through a visual survey of Quaker material culture -- from such everyday objects as clothing, furniture, and silver to paintings, quilts and architecture -- Henderson will explore the many ways in which Friends throughout American history have used objects to communicate, as well as navigate, Quaker values. She will discuss what constitutes a shared Quaker aesthetic and how such an aesthetic has changed over time and place.
