President Donald Trump on Saturday proposed an immigration deal to end the government shutdown, providing temporary protection for some undocumented immigrants along with other measures in exchange for $5.7 billion in funding for his border wall. But the overture, made in an address from the White House, had already been rejected by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats who said itlargely repackaged a proposal that had failed earlier.

The approach offered little hope for ending the government shutdown, which entered its fifth week Saturday. Democrats insisted they would not negotiate on anything while the government remained partially closed. Yet Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would test Democratic unity anyway, announcing plans to put the proposal up for a vote next week.
