Notes from Sally


The 5th grade chorus and the 5/6 orchestra will present their winter concert this Thursday evening at 7 PM in the Kogod Arts Center. The program will be repeated on Friday afternoon at 2:30. Parents are welcome to attend either performance.

On Friday students from St. Coletta’s School will be visiting members of Burt Nadler’s and Steve Mann’s advisory for break and lunch. St. Coletta’s serves students with autism, mental retardation, and multiple disabilities, and our students have worked with them on the fall Service Days. We are glad to welcome them to our building!

Booklets detailing the local Minimester options will be sent home with students by the end of the week. Please see that booklet for information about apprenticeships as well.

On Friday, January 20th our assembly speaker will be Paula Young Shelton. Ms. Shelton is the daughter of Andrew Young, civil rights leader and former US Ambassador to the UN, Mayor of Atlanta, and Georgia congressman. She is the author of the book Child of the Civil Rights Movement about her experiences growing up in the midst of this historic time. Ms. Shelton will be selling copies of her book for $20.00 on January 20th. Students who are interested in purchasing a copy should bring money to school that day.

Please plan to join us for an interesting evening called "Looking Ahead to College: Keeping Things in Perspective." Our speaker will be Upper School Director of College Counseling Eric Monheim. The discussion will be held in the Middle School Drama Studio on Wednesday evening, January 25th at 7:30 (designated on the calendar as the Middle School Parents Association Meeting.) This program was presented two years ago and was a popular and helpful look ahead at the college process. This is open to any Middle School parent.

Parents are invited to join us for our regular Meeting for Worship on Thursday morning, January 26th from 8:10 – 8:40 AM in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room.

Looking ahead: Conversations with Sally are beginning. These informal parent sessions are held in the Dining Room beginning at 7:45 AM. The first grade level to be held is 8th grade, next Wednesday morning, January 18th. Other grade levels will meet on the following dates: 5th grade on Monday, February 13th, 6th grade on Wednesday, February 15th, and 7th grade on Wednesday, February 29th. Please note that 5th and 6th have changed from the original dates.

I hope you can join us! Also looking ahead: The Used Book Fair is just around the corner! Please drop off gently worn books appropriate for 5th-8th grades at the MS library between now and spring break.

I spoke with the fifth graders last week to remind them that “reply all” and all-grade emails are not to be used with their SFS email accounts. This is a good time to remind everyone that Class lists are to be used only for school business. Using “reply all” really clogs the system!

For clarification: IT support (the “help” desk) is available from 7 AM – 6 PM on school days. Weekend requests for help are answered if possible, although staff are working from home and do not have full resources available for trouble-shooting. Students who are having laptop issues should notify their teacher about their difficulty so that teachers are aware.

SNEAKERS by Jim Marvin This modern retelling of the classic Grimm's tale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses takes place in a school where hard-nosed Principal Stone discourages all types of distractions, including music and dancing. His mission: the pursuit of academic excellence. However, new student Toby Bell thinks differently. The internal music deep inside that Toby expresses lures Principal Stone's three children (Francine, Alex, and Sarah) into a number of evening escapades of singing and dancing. This results in holes in the sneakers of each child. Principal Stone appoints two of the schools outstanding students to follow his children to solve this "hole" mystery. Music to include contemporary music selected by directors and cast.

Artrageous: Call for Performers and Parent Volunteers

Performers -- it's not too late! If you are a troubadour who loves to sing, a dancer who loves to prance, a magician with a few tricks up your sleeves, or a band that has got its groove on, please contact Maude Fish at maude.fish@comcast.net and let her know of your interest in performing at ArtRageous on Sunday, January 29. Please send her the following information: your name; your grade; what you will perform and who it's by; and any accompanist or audio/visual equipment needs. Maude Fish will get back to you as to your performance time and place (and will try to accommodate your scheduling needs). Don't be late for an important date -- ArtRageous 2012 is just around the corner.

Additional Arts Committee Meeting

An ADDITIONAL Parents Association Arts Committee Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 12, from 7:30-9:00 p.m. to plan for ArtRageous 2012. The meeting will take place in the Upper School Library Meeting Room. This 1/12 meeting is in addition to the meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 26th. Many Sidwell students already have signed up to participate, and there remains important planning to make all things flourish at ArtRageous 2012, so we look forward to seeing you there.

Topic: ‘Of the Best Sort but Plain’: An Exploration of Quaker Aesthetics in American Art and Architecture

The SFS Parents Association invites you to join Sidwell Friends parent and art historian Amy Henderson for a discussion of Quaker aesthetics in the new Upper School Meeting House on Monday, January 23rd from 7:00-9:00 pm. Through a visual survey of Quaker material culture—from such everyday objects as clothing, furniture, and silver to paintings, quilts and architecture—Henderson will explore the many ways in which Friends throughout American history have used objects to communicate, as well as navigate, Quaker values. She will discuss what constitutes a shared Quaker aesthetic and how such an aesthetic has changed over time and place.

Erg, Play, Love

Wash away your guilt from consuming too many Valentine's chocolates and join the Sidwell Friends Rowing Team for a fun-filled way to get out and exercise. The first annual National Capital Erg Invitational: Erg, Play, Love event will be held at Sidwell Friends very own athletic center on Sunday, February 12, 2012. In addition to some serious erg events to test your mettle, try some of the fun couples and mixed relays. Watch coaches compete against one another, come in Valentine's costumes for a special creativity prize, and more! Mark your calendars now!

Kids of all ages (meaning adults too) can build anything they would like out of the boxes. The sky's the limit!

We will also collect toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls for our new totem pole project. Feel free to drop them before Artrageous or bring them with you.

We will eventually have a drop off at the Upper School campus, but please contact Allison Tierney at atierney427@gmail.com if you have boxes, and she will arrange for the drop off.
