Ministry

JVC Northwest has been extremely fortunate to receive a national AmeriCorps grant
to help support the living expenses of those Jesuit Volunteers (JVs) offering direct
social, education, health and environmental services. However, the service of those
providing only direct ministry - a crucial part of JVC Northwest's mission - are
not funded by this grant.

to support the service of all the JVs today.

Nick Dominique, a JV serving as a Youth Minister in Grays Harbor, Washington, shares
a story about a man suffering from schizophrenia who walked into his office at St.
Mary's Church:

After he initially asked for a moment of prayer, I said that I was too busy and
didn't have time, but after he asked a second time I allowed myself to live in the
present and pray with him. So, for about half an hour, I sat, prayed, and listened
to what he had to say. Since our first meeting, he has come back to our office and
I have made sure to take the time to pray and talk with him. The time I spent being
present with him has opened my eyes to how I am called to minister to the community
as a whole.

Nick's experience speaks to the fundamental nature of JVC Northwest's dedication
to ministry. Throughout their year of service, the JVs are not only serving the
most vulnerable, they are journeying with them: sharing their challenges and heartaches,
celebrating their achievements, and being present in their lives. Above all, the
JVs are giving those living on the margins the crucial gift of companionship. By
doing so, they are validating their experiences, offering the compassionate support
needed in times of struggle, and bringing peace into their often troubled lives.
