A Focus on Member Engagement

On behalf of the entire Council of The Yale Club, I wish all of you a Happy New Year! I enjoyed seeing so many of you at our New Year’s party last Thursday.

I’d like to introduce you to a new feature in our monthly email. One of our goals for 2019 is to expand the continuing conversation with all of you about the Club. There are a great many ideas teed up to enhance your experience here. Strategic initiatives are also underway. With your guidance and feedback, the Club’s management is tackling these in collaboration with the Club’s busy committee network.

There is a great story here to be told. Yet we need to do a much better job of sharing these improvements with you. That’s why we will now include several short articles in this email each month, written by our management, committees, members, and Club staff. We will inform you on important Club developments, both the strategic and the humble.

We seek your input on all of this activity. Our intent is to provide you more opportunities for feedback and engagement. By providing the timely and important information you need in bite-sized pieces, we hope to spark your responses. This simple practice should result in a better Club experience for all. Please let us know if there are any topics you would like addressed.

The Yale Club of New York City Moves up the Platinum Clubs of America Ranking

The Platinum Clubs of America is the most respected ranking of private clubs in the country. The bi-annual ordering is derived from a comprehensive ballot system. Voting delegates are selected on a national level from the most respected industry professionals. The presidents of the clubs that employ them are also provided with a ballot. Voters assign ranks to nominated clubs, and points are assigned and tabulated. The top 50 City Clubs based on their composite score are named Platinum Clubs and listed in rank order.

Events for All Ages

One of the Activities Committee’s initiatives in the New Year is to expand our family-friendly programming. While we have always had popular children’s events around the holidays, such as our annual Children’s Halloween Party and Children’s Holiday Party, we are working on making the Club a more inviting place for members’ children throughout the year.

To that end, in early March, we are bringing back our International Children’s Movie Film Screening Series. These are incredibly fun events where we screen a foreign kid’s film, paired with a themed lunch. In the past, we have watched Ponyo, paired with a sushi-making class, and Secret of the Kells, alongside an Irish-themed brunch. Stay tuned for more information about our March screening, and other future family-oriented events.

The Yale Club Squash Program Continues to Grow

The Squash Sub-committee has been hard at work the past few months preparing and planning for the winter Squash season. To start, we are excited to announce the addition of our new Assistant Squash Pro, Tommy Wolfe. Tommy is a native New Yorker who took up the game of Squash at the age of ten, was a top junior player, and on the national championship team at Trinity College. He has been teaching and competing in SDA Pro Doubles Tour since graduating. With the new addition to the team, The Yale Club can now expand our Squash program and offerings. We have added two new Adult Clinics and have extend our popular Box League (currently more than 70 players participating). Sign-up now for the new Box League session beginning the second week of February. We have programs for beginners to advanced players and from teens to over 70’s. Join in the fun and get some exercise along the way.

Annual Inter-Club Snow Ball at the Princeton Club

Its mission is to facilitate the translation of research from Yale’s labs, into products and services that benefit society. OCR is recognized as a leading force for catalyzing economic growth by identifying, counseling, and nurturing early-stage technologies, and guiding the transition into robust companies.

Jon Soderstrom, the Managing Director of the OCR, will be speaking on the evolving innovation ecosystem around Yale and New Haven and the impact on economic development in the State of Connecticut. Please join Dr. Soderstrom for a reception at 6:30 pm, followed by his lecture at 7:00 pm.

Leave Valentine’s Day to us this year. Bring your date to the Club for the Chef’s decadent five-course dinner loaded with extravagant delights.

Start the evening with a scallop ceviche served with passionfruit and espelette pepper. For your main course, you’ll have the option of the classic filet mignon and lobster duo or a delicate seared halibut, followed by a sweet finish of a crepe soufflé or berry panna cotta for dessert. We’ll also provide a special sparkling wine toast for you and your special someone.

We have multiple seatings available, so please make your reservation for $65 per person or $110 per person with wine pairings, exclusive of taxes and gratuities. This event sells out, so please reserve well in advance. All reservations become final sale at 5:00 pm on Thursday, February 7.
