San Miguel scholar on the move!

When Kelvin Mejia began sixth grade, he never imagined that in just six years he
would study French and art history in Paris. At San Miguel, however, he encountered
teachers who urged him to dream big and reach his full potential.

Kelvin and his mother visited San Miguel at the recommendation of a friend, and
were immediately impressed by the school and its small size. "What I liked most
about my years at San Miguel was the relationship and bond I built with everyone
there," he said. "Because it's small, you get to know everybody."


His strong relationships with teachers and classmates helped Kelvin remain focused
on his studies, despite the dangerous distractions in his area. "There was a lot
of gang violence and drug and alcohol abuse in our area," he said. "Having my teachers
and older classmates at San Miguel to look up to motivated me to get past that."

Preparing our students for success

Nearly a decade ago, the San Miguel School welcomed the first class of 17 students
to the school's original home in a church basement. Today, San Miguel looks very
different, with a modernized building featuring a library and a state-of-the-art
computer classroom. Our current student body includes 61 boys-our largest enrollment
to date.

Despite these changes, our mission remains the same: To provide disadvantaged Latino
boys with the academic, social and spiritual growth that will prepare them to succeed
in high school and become men of faith. The majority of our students enter 6th
grade scoring below grade-level in reading and math. After three years with support
from the San Miguel community, our students are achieving remarkable results.

Giving hope to students, school & community

When Mike Jones became involved with San Miguel School, he knew he wanted to help
give a group of disadvantaged boys the gift of a lifetime-an excellent Catholic
Lasallian education. "I wanted to make a difference in the lives of these deserving
young boys who might not otherwise be encouraged or guided to complete their education,"
Mike said.

This school year, Mike and his wife Maria are sponsoring their first San Miguel
student. "When I recently visited San Miguel, I saw how my student, John is inspired
by the teachers and his new classmates. I know that I have made a great decision
to help John achieve his dream of becoming a San Miguel graduate, who will hopefully
graduate from a high school and college someday," Mike said. "As a student sponsor,
I realize that my gift of a scholarship for John has brought hope to his family
and neighbors, and quite honestly could have a tremendous impact on the local community."

Visitor from Rome receives warm welcome

On November 7, San Miguel students welcomed a special visitor from Rome: Superior
General Brother Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, FSC, who holds the highest office
of the Christian Brothers. Bro. Álvaro was accompanied by Brothers Robert Schieler,
General Councilor, and Dennis Malloy - Visitor (Provincial) of DENA. The visitors
enjoyed a student-guided tour of the school, followed by an all-school assembly
that included an address from Bro. Álvaro and a Q & A session with the boys.
The boys presented the visitors with gifts, including a giant greeting card designed
by a student artist and signed by each member of the San Miguel community. As a
closing gift for their guests, the students sang the Christian Brothers Hymn,
Honneur à Toi.
