When Islamic State militants in northern Iraq destroyed cultural heritage sites in and around Mosul, they frequently targeted minority groups. In an effort to revitalize the city, the U.S. Department of State has selected a team led by Richard L. Zettler of the School of Arts and Sciences to undertake a three-year, two-phase stabilization project.

As a first-generation, low-income student, sophomore Carmen Duran of Maiden, N.C., is no stranger to adversity. Now, she’s bringing those experiences to her work with Young People For on a program supporting youth with the college-application process. In addition, Duran is keeping busy as a Civic Scholar, a Public Policy Research Scholar, a City Hall intern, and a member of the Undergraduate Assembly. “I hope to continue to serve as inspiration and reassurance for those that have been historically overlooked in the leadership and talent pipelines. ¡Sí, se puede!”

A new study from the School of Nursing surveys 13,000 bedside nurses about the quality of end-of-life care in nearly 500 U.S. hospitals. The majority of those interviewed described their hospital’s services unfavorably. “Even the best hospitals have significant room for improvement when it comes to providing better care for patients at the end of life,” says lead author Karen Lasater.

Regina Austin, Paul Heaton, David Rudovsky, and John Hollway of the Law School weigh in on the First Step Act, a bipartisan bill that aims to reform the criminal justice system. The bill “reflects a trend in sentencing reform that could eventually lighten the penalties of persons now held in state correctional facilities,” says Austin (above). However, they noted that the act will affect less than 10 percent of the nation’s incarcerated population.
