Shorenstein Center Director's Statement on the Death of Walter Walter Shorenstein

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
The Shorenstein Center has lost a great patron and benefactor. Walter Shorenstein died peacefully at home yesterday after an extraordinary 95 years of achievement, engagement and generosity. He was, to my mind, the embodiment of a great citizen. He loved his country and used his wealth, influence and remarkable energy to try to make it better. And he succeeded. The Shorenstein Center proudly bears his family name because of his open-handed willingness to create an enduring monument to his beloved daughter, Joan. But it is no less Walter's legacy. I know he was proud of what we have done here over nearly 25 years, and I also know he was looking forward - actively and penetratingly - to the next 25 years. We celebrate our 25th anniversary next year, and it will be an opportunity to mark his life and his contribution to the commonweal.
He was also a personality who prompted great affection and we at the Shorenstein Center feel we have, in the most personal sense, lost a genuine and cherished friend.
The memorial service will be on Monday in San Francisco. As you would expect, I shall be there.
