The cast and crew of Lost in Yonkers put together a wonderful production. Congratulations on a fabulous show! Last Monday, Upper School students collaborated with representatives from the African Leadership Academy, an innovative independent boarding school based in Johannesburg, South Africa, to offer an inspiring presentation on the academy’s mission. The African Leadership Academy brings together students from Africa and around the world to develop future global leaders. With a focus on ethical and entrepreneurial leadership, the academy strives to develop future leaders who will work toward attaining peace on the continent, ending poverty, and creating job opportunities. The presentation gave our students the chance to see how education can truly empower young people to make a global impact. On Wednesday, Upper School students learned more about our China Fieldwork Semester (CFS) study-abroad program. This residential immersive learning experience, based in Northwest Yunnan, China, offers students the chance to engage in hands-on cultural and ecological research in the mountains, rivers, and lakes in this region, as well as in the Tibetan plateau. This opportunity is open to rising juniors and rising seniors. Applications are due by January 9, 2017, for the 2018 semester-long program. For more information, please go to sidwell.edu/cfs. Questions should be directed to CFS Director John Flower at flowerj@sidwell.edu. Upper School parents are invited to join Upper School students and faculty/staff for Meeting for Worship on Thursday, December 1, at 9:35 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. We look forward to seeing you! In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I want to express my deep gratitude to all of you for making Sidwell Friends the incredible community that it is. I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving holiday! Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements GLOBAL PROGRAMS APPLICATION DEADLINE IS DEC. 1 The deadline to apply for the Upper School Global Programs is Thursday, December 1. Students interested in traveling for the community engagement, enrichment, and academic programs should submit the common application to room 222 by the end of the day on the 1st. The application is available at www.sidwell.edu/trips. Read the trip brochure here. SHORT-TERM HOST FAMILIES NEEDED We need short-term host families from January 22 to 28, 2017, for a group of visiting students from our sister school in Shanghai, the high school attached to Fudan University. There will be a total of 14 students and one teacher—eight girls and six boys. The Fudan group will spend Chinese New Year with us, so the host siblings are invited join the Fudan students for a special Spring Festival eve dinner on Friday, January 27. The students will all speak English and are led by their English teacher, Sun Ting, who is also the mother of Hengchu Zhang '10, SFS Chinese exchange student. This is the 25th year of our exchange with Fudan High School, and, with the help of your hospitality, we are looking forward to celebrating that long-standing relationship. Host families would provide transportation to and from school (on the host family schedule—the students will adapt) and a room for the visiting students. The Fudan students will spend two days shadowing SFS host students, and then will visit sites in DC on their own; host families do not need to serve as tour guides. This is a great chance for our Sidwell Friends community to reciprocate for the hospitality shown to our students over the years in Shanghai. Many thanks for your help in hosting this group! Please contact Qihui Tang at tangq@sidwell.edu for more information if your family is interested in hosting one or more of the Shanghai students. HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE FOR FAPAC: THROUGH DEC. 2 Please help us provide toys for the Foster and Adoptive Parent Advocacy Center (FAPAC) holiday gift drive. FAPAC, which trains and supports foster, kinship, and adoptive families, hosts a holiday party for children in the DC foster care system and their foster, adoptive, and birth families; presents will be given to all of the children at this event on December 17. Sign up here to drop off new, unwrapped gifts in their original packaging, or give gift cards, today through December 2. Gifts should be left in boxes by Dean Woods's office. Gift cards should be left with Shoshanna Sumka, room 222. The value of each gift should be less than $50. Volunteers are welcome to help wrap gifts. Thank you for helping with this Sidwell Friends tradition. Questions? E-mail them to marlin.dohlman@gmail.com or sumkas@sidwell.edu. For more about FAPAC, visit dcfapac.org. ACTION NEEDED BY JAN. 6: SFS FINANCIAL AID Welcome to the official start of the financial aid season! The Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) is now available for families looking to apply for financial aid for the 2017/18 academic year. Families can log in by visiting the SSS for Families website and clicking "Log in to Complete or Update Your PFS" or by accessing the SSS Family Portal directly. You may find this information helpful: SSS Family Guide to Financial Aid. Applications from current families are due no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, January 6. Submitting an application after the due date may prevent your family from receiving the full award for which you qualify. And please remember, information from both parents must be submitted regardless of marital status. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Frankie Brown, director of admissions and financial aid, at brownf@sidwell.edu. Events MISS BENNET: CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY: NOV. 25 If Lost in Yonkers inspired you to want more theater, join fellow SFS community members Friday, November 25, at 8:00 p.m. at Round House Theatre in Bethesda for Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, featuring alumna Katie Kleiger ’11. SFS friends are gathering in the lobby at 7:30 p.m. before enjoying the show and a post-show discussion with the cast. For tickets, please call the Round House Theatre box office at (240) 644-1100 between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Mention you are with the Sidwell Friends group. Tickets will be available at will call the night of the show. Note that there is also a night for students on December 2 when, for $10, they can enjoy dinner, a talk about the play, and the performance. For more information, check the Round House Theatre website. CASTING CALL FOR PARENTS OF SENIORS: DEC. 6 It’s time to start planning our Senior Celebration! This is a Parents Association-sponsored evening with food, fun, and a little foolishness! It is the big event before the main event (graduation!) and a time to celebrate our seniors and the memories we've shared as a community over the years. The Class of 2017 Senior Celebration will take place on Saturday, June 3, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Kogod Arts Center. A light supper and parent-supplied entertainment will be provided. In the past, the parent entertainment has included silly skits, songs, and slide shows. Traditionally, at some point all the parents take the stage! Many volunteers are needed to make this event a success. With that in mind, all senior parents are invited (and urged) to join us for our first meeting on Tuesday, December 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the US Choral Room. We need help planning the event, composing funny lyrics, writing skits, producing videos, organizing a slide show, and adding a few new ideas to the mix! If you haven't volunteered yet at Sidwell Friends, now is your chance ... in fact, it is literally your last chance as a Class of 2017 parent. Don't miss the opportunity to help make this an awesome, fun, and memorable celebration for all of our graduates. —Peggy Dotzel and Jackie Roberts, Senior Celebration Chairs (Margaret.dotzel@verizon.net; jroberts3413@gmail.com) ALL-COMMUNITY MEETING FOR WORSHIP: NOV. 22 Query: When we have opposing viewpoints, how do we communicate our truths with kindness? Please join other members of our community for meeting on Tuesday, November 22, at 6:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room on the Wisconsin Avenue campus. Refreshments will be served before and after meeting. If you plan to attend and especially if you have a child who would like to join our children’s program, please REGISTER HERE. Friends and family who might be visiting are welcome. More information is available on the calendar here. LAST CHANCE TO SEE "LOST IN YONKERS": TODAY @ 2:30 P.M.! Open to losing yourself in great theater? Join us in the Mary Ellen Caplin Theater at 2:30 p.m. today, November 20, for the last performance of Lost in Yonkers by Neil Simon. The acting is terrific, seats are available, and the parking is free. This is not high school theater, this is theater in a high school setting! Bring a friend. Tickets may be purchased at the box office. This comic drama has been called Neil Simon's best play. More about the show is here. SFS AT THE WIZARDS: JAN. 6 SFS Community Night at the Washington Wizards is Friday, January 6. The 7:00 p.m. game is against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Tickets are $25. Our SFS chamber chorus will sing the national anthem. Early access for our group begins at 5:00 p.m. and includes a variety of pregame opportunities for children and adults to get close to the players. Tickets and information about sign-ups for special access opportunities (Fan Tunnel, Bench Warmer, Anthem Kids) will be available via the Sunday newsletter on December 4. FRANCE SUMMER PROGRAM INTEREST MEETING: NOV. 15 To learn more about the two-week summer program in Southern France, "Language and Cultural Immersion in the Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrenees Region," please join trip leader Claudine Mace on Tuesday, November 15, 6:30–8:00 p.m. in room 104/106. There will be light refreshments. Global programs information can be found at www.sidwell.edu/trips. Applications are due on December 1. Other ONGOING TOILETRIES COLLECTIONS If you are traveling and staying at an establishment that provides toiletries such as soap and lotion and you do not use them, please bring them to school. We share them with many local nonprofit organizations such as Bethesda Cares that help underserved populations. Collections are ongoing; items may be dropped off at Lower School, Middle School, or Zartman House. COMMUNITY COMMUNICATIONS AND PHOTOS If you are looking for photos or stories about events on campus, don’t forget to check the links at the bottom of our website home page. Click on the SmugMug icon (green happy face) for team and event photos that you can view and download for free, and click on the Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram icons for news and reminders via social media. There’s a lot of great material on these sites! Finally, please send any photos or stories you’d like to share to communications@sidwell.edu. QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS When is it correct to rise and speak in a Quaker Meeting for Worship? How do you know? The simplest answer is, when you find you have no choice. But the most useful explications we’ve seen come in the form of slightly tongue-in-cheek flow charts such as this one from Wellesley Friends Meeting in Wellesley, Massachusetts, or this one from West Hills Friends Meeting in Portland, Oregon, each of which captures important aspects. The teens group at Friends Meeting of Washington recently performed a skit written by Debby Churchman more or less in the same vein as this video here that is also helpful. All of these take the reader through a process of discernment—making sure your urge to speak isn’t something trivial like wanting to reply to someone else who spoke, or wanting to indulge in a political rant, or needing to engage in personal ruminations that, however valuable to you, may be irrelevant to others. In practice, it’s often simpler. Many people report feeling an urge to speak that doesn’t sit well if denied. The longer they delay speaking, the more they feel hijacked by a need to give voice to the message. Some find themselves trembling (“quaking” in 17th-century parlance), breaking into a sweat, or displaying similar signs of inner conflict even when the message doesn’t seem that germane. Expectations vary slightly by meeting as well. Some are very silent; you may hear one message in six months. Others, particularly in politically active communities, gain a reputation as “talky.” Some also offer quieter, more meditative worship venues in parallel with the main meeting or at other times of the day or week. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
