Sunday - November 13, 2016 Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Announcements SHORT-TERM HOST FAMILIES NEEDED PARENT INPUT ON NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR POSITION HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE FOR FAPAC: THROUGH DEC. 2 ACTION NEEDED BY JAN. 6: SFS FINANCIAL AID UPPER SCHOOL GLOBAL PROGRAMS Events PBS FALL COFFEE GATHERING: NOV. 15 FRANCE SUMMER PROGRAM INTEREST MEETING: NOV. 15 ROUND HOUSE THEATER FEATURING KATIE KLEIGER '11: NOV. 25 PCW PARENTING EVENT: NOV. 15 SCHOOL YEAR ABROAD RECEPTION: NOV. 16 ALL-COMMUNITY MEETING FOR WORSHIP: NOV. 22 SCHOOL YEAR ABROAD INFO SESSION/RECEPTION: NOV. 16 Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, On Wednesday following the election, the Upper School community gathered at lunchtime for a meeting for sharing. Even as we recognize that there is a range of political views in our community, the meeting allowed us to gather to affirm our shared community values and seek the good in all. The hateful rhetoric that characterized much of this election does not and should not define who we are as a nation. As we move toward a place of greater mutual understanding across the many divisions that this election highlighted in our national body politic, we can guide our students to uphold the fundamental Quaker values of respect and community as they enter the larger world. Embracing our shared values will allow us to move forward together and work toward the greater common good. Earlier in the week, Upper School students had the chance to learn more about the various international and domestic School-sponsored travel opportunities available this year, including trips to Japan, Jamaica, France, New Orleans, West Virginia, Costa Rica, Rwanda, Tanzania, and South Africa. For more information about all of these trips, please visit www.sidwell.edu/trips. Students will apply using a common application, which is due December 1. Some financial aid for these trips is available. Please direct questions to Global Initiatives and Service Learning Coordinator Shoshanna Sumka at sumkas@sidwell.edu. Tomorrow evening (November 14) at 7:00 p.m., parents of 10th graders will have the opportunity to learn more about the required standardized testing for college admissions. Our College Counseling office has invited Matthew Pietrafetta from Academic Approach, an organization that specializes in standardized testing, to help parents navigate this process. Director of College Counseling Patrick Gallagher will also offer general information about the college admissions process and timeline. The 9th Grade Thanksgiving Pie Bake will take place on Sunday, November 20, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. The pies will be taken to area shelters for Thanksgiving. This is a great event for students and parents to work together to serve our larger community. Please come out to see the Upper School play, Lost in Yonkers, this weekend (November 18-20)! Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements SHORT-TERM HOST FAMILIES NEEDED We need short-term host families from January 22 to 28, 2017, for a group of visiting students from our sister school in Shanghai, the high school attached to Fudan University. There will be a total of 14 students and one teacher---eight girls and six boys. The Fudan group will spend Chinese New Year with us, so the host siblings are invited join the Fudan students for a special Spring Festival eve dinner on Friday, January 27. The students will all speak English and are led by their English teacher, Sun Ting, who is also the mother of Hengchu Zhang '10, SFS Chinese exchange student. This is the 25th year of our exchange with Fudan High School, and, with the help of your hospitality, we are looking forward to celebrating that long-standing relationship. Host families would provide transportation to and from school (on the host family schedule---the students will adapt) and a room for the visiting students. The Fudan students will spend two days shadowing SFS host students, and then will visit sites in DC on their own; host families do not need to serve as tour guides. This is a great chance for our Sidwell Friends community to reciprocate for the hospitality shown to our students over the years in Shanghai. Many thanks for your help in hosting this group! Please contact Qihui Tang at tangq@sidwell.edu for more information if your family is interested in hosting one or more of the Shanghai students. PARENT INPUT ON NEW ATHLETIC DIRECTOR POSITION Last call: We invite Middle and Upper School parents interested in interscholastic athletics at Sidwell Friends to complete a short survey (link below). The new AD will have responsibility for interscholastic sports in grades 7-12; Anne Renninger will continue to serve as PE Department Chair, working with grades 5-12. We will share your input with the faculty search committee, the PA leadership team, and Bryan Garman. Please complete the survey by Monday, November 14. HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE FOR FAPAC: THROUGH DEC. 2 Please help us provide toys for the Foster and Adoptive Parent Advocacy Center (FAPAC) holiday gift drive. FAPAC, which trains and supports foster, kinship, and adoptive families, hosts a holiday party for children in the DC foster care system and their foster, adoptive, and birth families; presents will be given to all of the children at this event on December 17. Sign up here to drop off new, unwrapped gifts in their original packaging, or give gift cards, today through December 2. Gifts should be left in boxes by Dean Woods's office. Gift cards should be left with Shoshanna Sumka, room 222. The value of each gift should be less than $50. Volunteers are welcome to help wrap gifts. Thank you for helping with this Sidwell Friends tradition. Questions? E-mail them to marlin.dohlman@gmail.com or sumkas@sidwell.edu. For more about FAPAC, visit dcfapac.org. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS “We are a people that follow after those things that make for peace, love and unity; it is our desire that others’ feet may walk in the same.” ---Margaret Fell, letter to the King on persecution, 1660 “There is a spirit which I feel that delights to do no evil, nor to revenge any wrong, but delights to endure all things, in hope to enjoy its own in the end. Its hope is to outlive all wrath and contention, and to weary out all exaltation and cruelty, or whatever is of a nature contrary to itself.” ---James Naylor, deathbed testimony, 1660 Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu!
