SOFTBALL AND GIRLS' LACROSSE: APRIL 18 AND 21 QUAKER LIFE COMMITTEE COFFEE FOR PARENTS: APRIL 19 A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS: APRIL 22 SINGIN' IN THE RAIN JR.: APRIL 21 AND 22 QUAKER LIFE COFFEE AND DISCUSSION: APRIL 24 COLLEGE COUNSELING EVENTS: APRIL 26 AND 27 Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, This coming Wednesday is Founder's Day, an all-School celebration in honor of our founder, Thomas Sidwell, who opened the School in 1883 with just 18 students. We will begin the morning with a special alumni program: "Let Your Life Speak." Students will have the chance to meet SFS graduates who represent a wide variety of professions and who will discuss their professional work and service to others. This program will be followed by an all-School Meeting for Worship, in which students from PK through 12th grade will gather together for shared silent worship followed by special vocal performances from ensemble groups in each of our three divisions. We will then have an all-School picnic, giving students the chance to jump on moonbounces and engage in creative activities, games, and arts and crafts. The day will close with an Upper School Arts Guild program, where student artists will perform before the entire Upper School. Following Arts Guild, students will be dismissed for PE and athletics. Founder's Day is a joyful celebration of our School, and one of the best days of the year! In other news, April 22 is our annual School auction, at which we raise funds for student financial aid. This is a wonderful community event, and I hope to see many of you there. Warmly, Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements REGISTRATION FOR GRANDPARENTS AND FRIENDS DAY The Upper School's Grandparents and Friends Day is coming up on Friday, May 12. Registration, which includes filling out a name tag and snacking on light refreshments, will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Arts Center courtyard. A program for visitors will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. After taking a break with the Upper School students, our guests will have the opportunity to enjoy two classroom experiences. Grandparents and friends are also invited to join their students for lunch in the Wannan Gym. Photographers will be present to capture the morning, and photos will be shared on our online portal. Our program will end at 12:45 p.m. Please use this registration link, and feel free to share it with parents if they would like to come. Mailed invitations will go out soon. If you have questions about the event, or if your guest needs special assistance, please contact Kathi Webb at webbk@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8109. LOWER SCHOOL GIVING TREE DONATIONS Please support the Lower School's Giving Tree project. Donations may be dropped in the collection bin at the Middle School, at the Zartman House front desk, in Mr. Woods's office, or in Ms. Sumka's office. The Giving Tree project is an ongoing, collaborative effort to create a community of students that understands that there are people who do not have the things they need, as opposed to all the stuff that they may want. Lower School students have worked together across classes and grade levels to generate a list of needed items. We ask the larger community to help collect these things, which will be packed in individual bags and distributed to clients of Bethesda Cares. 1. Q-tips (cotton swabs) 2. Cotton balls 3. Tissues 4. Baby wipes 5. Hand sanitizer 6. Saline eye drops 7. Granola bars and/or protein bars Thank you! Events GAMETIME! SOFTBALL AND GIRLS' LACROSSE: APRIL 18 AND 21 This week’s schedule features two girls’ teams: Softball vs. Maret on Tuesday, April 18, at 4:15 p.m. Girls’ lacrosse vs. NCS on Friday, April 21, at 4:15 p.m. If you would like your team or grade to participate in a special experience, please email the PA Athletics Committee at pa.athletics@sidwell.edu. Fan treats will be available at each event. We will also do our best to organize a "meet the players" opportunity. Next week’s schedule includes boys’ lacrosse on April 25 and crew on April 29. QUAKER LIFE COMMITTEE COFFEE FOR PARENTS: APRIL 19 Parents are invited to join members of the Quaker Life Committee for coffee and conversation on Wednesday, April 19, from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. in the Upper School library boardroom. Afterward, we will attend the all-School meeting that kicks off Founder's Day. The library boardroom is on the lower level of the Upper School library. Due to other events that morning, we ask that you avoid coming into the library before 8:45 a.m. If you arrive early, you are welcome to wait in the Fox Den. This event is in addition to our monthly coffee, which will take place on Monday, April 24, at 8:00 a.m. in the Zartman House Bernstein Drawing Room. A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS: APRIL 22 Join us at our annual SFS community celebration in support of financial aid. This festive evening with fine food, entertainment, and opportunities for audience participation reminds us of our collective commitment to the joys of exploration and discovery and the importance of providing educational access to students from a financially diverse set of households. Last week’s newsletter provided an overview of the evening’s events. We've answered a few questions here: Seats during the entertainment portion are not assigned. We trust that as you move from the buffet to the seated portion of the evening, you will find friends, old or new, with whom you can sit. The sign-up parties are events with room for 40 or more people. You may sign up and buy a seat individually or in groups. This year’s parties include a wine tasting and a progressive dinner. Check out our SmugMug link here to see photos from last year if you’re curious about how the Athletic Center can be decorated for a party, what people wear, or who you might see. Lots of our faculty show their support by coming to this party. Register now! A Night for Scholars will take place on Saturday, April 22, from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. in the Sidwell Friends Athletic Center. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN JR.: APRIL 21 AND 22 The Middle School will have the SFS community “walking down the lane with a happy refrain” after they perform Singin’ in the Rain Jr., a musical adapted from the classic 1952 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film of the same name. SFS 7th and 8th graders are currently learning about the Golden Age of musicals, a very important period in America’s cultural history. For more information about the show, please see the attached flyer. The show will take place on Friday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m. in the Mary Ellen Caplin Theater in the Kogod Arts Center. Admission is free, and reservations are not necessary. QUAKER LIFE COFFEE AND DISCUSSION: APRIL 24 Join MS and US Quaker Life Committee clerks for coffee, discussion, and Meeting for Worship on Monday, April 24, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. in the Zartman House Bernstein Drawing Room. Our lively discussions inspire our Quaker Quotes and Questions feature in this e-newsletter, so bring your inquiring mind! While timing is geared toward US and MS drop-off, relatives and caregivers from all divisions are welcome. COLLEGE COUNSELING EVENTS: APRIL 26 AND 27 Juniors and parents of juniors are invited to attend the Washington Area Independent School (WAIS) 2017 College Fair on Wednesday, April 26. The event will be held at Georgetown Preparatory School in the Hanley Center from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. More than 200 colleges and universities will attend. Parents of students in grades 9 through 11 are invited to attend a Parents Coffee with three admissions deans from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, in the RLS Meeting Room. Admissions deans from Boston College, the University of Michigan, and Williams College will offer insights on the admissions process and engage in a Q&A session about it. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS Quakers talk about "centering" in Meeting for Worship or in moments of silence, but I noticed Quaker writer Parker Palmer blogging about poet Robinson Jeffers' admonition to "uncenter" ourselves. How do these two ideas intersect, especially in regard to self-centeredness versus compassion? What an interesting juxtaposition! It’s almost like the words "flammable" and "inflammable," in which two opposite-seeming constructions point in the same direction. In this case, the essential question is what we think lies at the center of Self. Quakers believe that underneath all the layers of self, in our true center, lies a window or connection to something far larger than what we think about ourselves. So when Quakers speak of centering, they mean letting go of all our business and busy-ness, and the internal noise of our Self, and reaching far beyond, into the infinite, as best we can. Robinson Jeffers, if I understand correctly, was expressing dismay at how humans tend to think Earth and its animals and plants and landscapes and systems are all about us, that they exist for the use and exploitation and pleasure of Homo sapiens. So in asking us to "uncenter," he's asking us to look away from and beyond our mere selves into the infinitely bigger natural universe. In both cases, the task is to forgo being self-centered and to embrace a larger and more essential version of reality that places our own little corner of the world in truer perspective. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practices, email our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committee's authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
